Inclusion in sport: Special Olympics state games in Rostock for the first time!
In less than three weeks the time has come: the Hanseatic city of Rostock will be the venue for the first state games of the Special Olympics in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from July 21st to 23rd, 2025. This major event aims to help people with intellectual or multiple disabilities gain greater recognition, self-confidence and participation in our society. According to the MV government, athletes will compete in five exciting disciplines, including basketball, boccia, football, swimming and athletics.
A special highlight of the event is the comprehensive supporting program, which includes both an opening and a closing ceremony. To give a first foretaste of the event, a media day will take place on July 7, 2025 at 10 a.m. in the athletics stadium in Rostock. The Minister of Social Affairs and Sports, Stefanie Drese, and Clemens Russell, the President of the Special Olympics Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Regional Association, are expected there. Journalists have the opportunity to conduct interviews with the two as well as athletes, coaches and the organizational team. The “Hansa Inclusion” project, which is particularly dedicated to football, will also be presented.
Visibility and recognition through sport
The state games not only serve to promote team spirit and sporting ability, but also as an important recognition competition for the 2026 National Games in Saarland. This means they offer participants an excellent platform to demonstrate their talent. The pre-registration phase for athletes ends on May 31, 2025 - so quick action is required.
A central component of the Special Olympics movement, which was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, is to help people with intellectual disabilities achieve greater recognition and a fulfilling life through sport, as emphasized on Deutschland.de. The focus here is on recreational rather than competitive sport, which means that medals are awarded but are not counted by country.
A unique event for everyone involved
The event in Rostock is a significant step in promoting inclusion in sport. Many athletes are expected to show off their best skills, while the public will have the opportunity to learn more about the talents and challenges of these athletes. It is also important that registrations for participation are received by July 4, 2025, so that the atmosphere at these unique games becomes even more unforgettable.
A photo of Nils Limberg is also available free of charge if the photographer is named accordingly. Such an event not only celebrates sport, but also strengthens diversity and cohesion in society.
The anticipation for the first Special Olympics State Games in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is growing, and everyone involved is working hard to make these games an unforgettable experience for the participants and spectators.
