State plans to modernize clinic without bureaucracy - 800 million euros for Rostock and Greifswald!

In a significant step towards modernizing university hospitals in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the state plans to reduce the bureaucratic hurdles when building hospitals. From 2026, the clinics in Rostock and Greifswald will take control of their construction projects themselves. Science Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) and Finance Minister Heiko Geue (SPD) emphasize the necessity of this reform in order to make the country's health infrastructure future-proof. According to NDR, between 600 and 800 million euros will flow into modernization by the middle of the next decade.

The decision to withdraw the state construction administration is described as an “important structural decision” by Minister Geue. The aim is for clinics to be able to respond more quickly and efficiently to the needs of their patients. A new ward and a modern operating center are being planned in Rostock, while a center specifically for cancer patients is being built in Greifswald.

Historical roots and modern developments

The university hospitals in Greifswald, which were founded at the end of the 19th century, have a long history. Various specialist clinics are located in the city center, while other clinics are located in the Fetten suburb and on the new campus. The buildings have constantly developed since the time of the GDR: a diagnostic center was built in 1980, followed by a ward between 1989 and 1990.

Construction of Germany's most modern hospital began in 1999, and numerous construction phases have shaped the appearance of the facility since then. A total of over 400 million euros has already been invested in the structural infrastructure. New facilities such as the diagnostic center or specialized treatment centers for children and adults offer a comprehensive range of medical services.

Building projects of the future

There are currently several projects on the agenda. In particular, the William B. Kannel Center for Community Medicine will be completed by the end of 2026. Work has been underway on this since November 2022, which underlines the intensity of the efforts to improve medical care. These investments are primarily a response to the growing healthcare needs in the region.

A crucial point in the new organization is that university medical centers must submit large construction projects worth more than 100 million euros to the state parliament's finance committee for approval. In addition, the state continues to secure loans and cover the repayment and interest in order to reduce the financial burden on the clinics.

However, it should be noted that the clinics must take responsibility for paying medical students, especially during the practical year. According to the union, there are also concerns that not all clinics comply with the collective agreement requirements for the electronic recording of working hours for doctors.

Overall, it is clear that the state would like to take more confident steps when building clinics in the future, with the aim of having a good hand for needs-based, modern medical care.
