State parliament protests: EU Commission is planning drastic funding cuts!

The state parliament in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is on the barricade against the latest financial planning by the EU Commission under the leadership of Ursula von der Leyen. All factions in this committee are united in their rejection of the announced centralization of funding allocation. They are calling on the state government to commit vehemently to maintaining a regionalized and subject-specific allocation of funds. There seems to be a lot of excitement here, as the planned changes could have a massive impact on funding policy.

Julian Barlen, the leader of the SPD parliamentary group, emphasizes how important it is that farmers and municipalities continue to have a say in the future in order to ensure planning security. In the course of this discussion, he also points out that around 20 billion euros have flowed from Brussels to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since 1990, which has made a decisive contribution to the modernization of infrastructure and the expansion of the Internet.

Dangers due to loss of funding

Particularly alarming are the warnings from CDU MP Thomas Diener, who warns of loss of funding of up to 90 percent for large agricultural companies. Daniel Peters, the CDU parliamentary group leader, also recorded his concerns in a letter to von der Leyen. These reform plans, which envisage a massive restructuring of the EU budget of around two trillion euros for the period from 2028 to 2034, are raising alarm bells for many farmers.

The federal government is skeptical about the proposal for a comprehensive increase in the EU budget because the member states need to stabilize their budgets. This position is strongly influenced by EU policy on agriculture, which has been fundamental since the introduction of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in 1962. The CAP's share of the EU budget has fallen from over 70 percent in the 1980s to around 25 percent. A total of 378,532 million euros has been earmarked for the CAP for the years 2023 to 2027, which once again underlines how critical financial support is for the region.

Regional developments and future prospects

The future of EU agricultural policy remains a hot topic. With concerns about possible dismantling plans in agricultural policy and calls for regional financial support, it is clear that those responsible in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have to fight for their interests. Given the challenges ahead, the region's voice could be crucial. Current developments show that the question of the allocation of financial resources is not only a political issue, but also a social issue that affects everyone.
