Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania relies on battery trains: Successful test drive!
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a new wind is changing in regional traffic: From 2027, ODEG, Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn GmbH, will jerk through the area with 14 battery trains. On July 14, 2025, the first test drive of these environmentally friendly vehicles took place, which do without overhead lines. This continues a trend that strives for more sustainability, especially in Germany.
The battery trains have a range of around 80 kilometers and offer an excellent solution for regions that currently have no electrification in rail transport. The cost of the new trains amounts to around 98 million euros, of which the federal government contributes 15 million euros, such as [NDR] (https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/Mecklenburg-Vorpommern/odeg-startet-mit-ku-zuegen-in-mecklenburg-vormernabmerne-102.html).
a step into the future
Modern mobility in train traffic is not only easier, but also more environmentally friendly. Deutsche Bahn also plans to use the first e-trains in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from the end of 2026. In this way, the electrification gaps in regional traffic are closed bit by bit, which reduces the dependence on diesel vehicles.
To advance to the switch to more environmentally friendly transport solutions, the maintenance work in Parchim is brought up to scratch. Here the capacities are to be tripled, and the construction costs for modernization are an impressive 18 million euros, which are also supported by federal funding. According to the plans, a new transport contract between the state and ODEG is agreed, which supports precisely this development.
The way to less diesel
At Deutsche Bahn, one has settled even more ambitious climate goals: by 2040, the company is to be completely climate -neutral. This measure is not only limited to local public transport; The Federal Republic has recognized that sustainable alternatives to diesel are urgently needed. Innovative solutions such as the battery trains, which are referred to as Battery Electric Multiple Units (Bemu), are an important step in the right direction. These trains are equipped with accumulators that can be charged on routes with overhead lines, and enable to drive emission -free on non -electrified routes, if they are operated with green electricity, reports Deutsche Bahn.
After the first "overhead line islands" are already being created near Kiel, the plans for electrification also sprout in other federal states, such as Rhineland-Palatinate and the Rhein-Ruhr region. These steps could lead to the fact that up to 10 million liters of diesel are saved annually, as described in company car.
The ODEG and Deutsche Bahn have set the course and show that it continues in German transport policy - and not only with a few new trains, but with a real awareness of the environment and sustainability. Regional transport in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is only the beginning.
