Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Festival 2025: A summer full of highlights!
The 2025 festival summer in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has far exceeded expectations. With around a third of events fully booked, the festival draws a positive conclusion. This comes from a report by NDR out. The summer was filled with impressive moments, consisting of both the established classical repertoire and daring new projects.
A special highlight was the performance of the internationally celebrated cellist Anastasia Kobekina. She said goodbye with the emotional Elgar cello concert and emphasized the diversity of the programs during her performance. She will also serve as the 2025 award winner in residence at the festival, and the audience can look forward to a concert with the NDR Radiophilharmonie under the direction of Stanislav Kochanovsky. You can hear pieces by Vaughan Williams, Elgar and Schumann, which will ensure an unforgettable concert experience.
Big names and sold out halls
Another attraction was Anne-Sophie Mutter's performance in the Redefin riding hall, which played in front of 2,800 spectators. The large crowd shows that the people of Cologne and the region have a keen sense of music. Particularly impressive was their performance of famous film music by John Williams, which was rounded off with a moving encore from “Schindler’s List”.
As director Ursula Haselböck emphasizes, Kobekina's participation was a “special touch” for the festival. The overall impressive balance speaks for itself: with 67,000 visitors, the festival has almost reached pre-Corona levels. This is also evident in the riding hall, which was also sold out with 2,700 visitors at two concerts and an open-air concert in Bothmer Castle.
Innovative formats and outlook for the future
Amidst these successes, there were also some unusual locations on the program, such as the first concert, which took place in a sheepfold. Such innovative formats have been very well received by viewers. Kobekina highlights the artistic freedom that allows musicians to try new things and inspire audiences to experience extraordinary venues.
Viola player Timothy Ridout has been announced for the 2026 festival spring and the first concert of next year will be opened on June 13th in Wismar by Herbert Blomstedt and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.
