Deutsche Telekom: Mobile phone boom in Mecklenburg despite stock market crisis!
Deutsche Telekom is at an exciting turning point. A massive expansion project is being pushed forward, particularly in rural regions such as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Telekom has currently increased network coverage in this region to almost 100 percent by putting four new cell phone masts into operation in the Mecklenburg Lake District. Five additional locations have been modernized, increasing household cell phone coverage to an impressive 99 percent. A total of 183 locations are already active in the district, and a further 98 are to be added in the next three years, as reported by boerse-express.com.
However, despite these operational successes, investor reaction looks critical. The high investments in rural areas often bring questionable returns, as these areas generate less revenue per transmission tower than urban areas. Telekom's strategic focus is not only on the optics of the expansion, but also on improving the network quality along crucial railway routes, such as the Berlin-Rostock route. The question here is whether T-Mobile, the US subsidiary, can offset the investment burden in the domestic market, especially in view of the weaker German key figures.
Investments in the future
In order to master the challenge of network coverage and the further development of the infrastructure, Deutsche Telekom plans to invest around 21% of its service revenues in networks and technologies by 2027. For the year 2024 alone, an impressive 16 billion euros are planned for the construction and operation of networks, of which 5.8 billion euros are to flow in Germany. A future-oriented aspect is the use of artificial intelligence to optimize infrastructure planning and advance fiber optic expansion, according to the current Analysis by Telekom.
In general, 10.1 million households in Europe now have access to fiber optics, which corresponds to a coverage of 38.5%. Deutsche Telekom aims to provide more than 10 million fiber optic connections by the end of 2024 and plans to provide fiber optic connections to an additional 2.5 million households in 2025. By 2030, every household in Germany should have a fiber optic connection.
Challenges in broadband expansion
The expansion of nationwide gigabit networks based on fiber optics by 2030 is particularly important for the attractiveness of rural regions. However, there are significant challenges, such as high investment costs due to low population densities and long expansion times due to greater distances. Without public funding, many projects are not financially viable. Strategies such as collaborations between counties, municipalities and telecommunications companies as well as the use of a technology mix, including LTE, are crucial to overcoming these challenges and getting closer to the confident targets. The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture describes this as essential for the future viability of rural regions.
Another challenge is the so-called “white spots” in mobile phone coverage. These strategic gaps are to be closed gradually, and the federal government's mobile communications funding program aims to significantly improve coverage by the end of 2025.
Deutsche Telekom remains on the move through expansion and strategic investments, despite some skeptical investors. With a good hand, Telekom could succeed in serving both the rural and urban markets and thus operate successfully in the long term.
