Loneliness in old age? Visit our storytelling café on October 15th!
In a world in which so many people are alone, the project “On&Off for 60+ together against loneliness” is a hopeful ray of hope. On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, a thematic storytelling café will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the 2nd floor above Lidl at Strelitzer Str. 2-4, Neustrelitz. Here, the participants will get to know the Mecklenburg Lake District MitMachZentrale under the guidance of Carolin Illerhaus-Kulow and chat about hobbies, interests and volunteer opportunities in a relaxed atmosphere.
This event is seen as a step to disseminate information about meeting places, clubs and volunteer positions and to show ways out of loneliness. The importance of this event is supported by the results of a Forsa survey: Since 2021, more than 22% of people aged 75 and over say they often or occasionally feel lonely. Society has a long way to go here, because as the Maltese emphasize, one in ten older people in Germany is affected by loneliness. This loneliness often develops gradually, as social networks shrink with age and contact behavior changes.
Volunteering – a solution to loneliness
This makes it all the more important to create spaces in which people can meet. During the storytelling café, Carola Illerhaus-Kulow will not only provide information about the MitMachZentrale, but also present the “Silver Surfer” program. This is specifically aimed at older people and aims to provide them with digital skills to make them safer in today's connected world. Anyone interested can find out about the numerous ways to get active here.
The event could not only be a source of information, but also a platform to improve the quality of life of the participants. In this way, the subjectively perceived lack of contacts is combated through personal encounters and commitment. The Maltese describe overcoming loneliness as difficult, especially in old age. That’s why initiatives like the storytelling café are indispensable.
Invitation to participate
Anyone interested in learning more about hobbies, interests and volunteer opportunities is warmly invited. An open ear for the needs of the older generation is required! Ultimately, each of us can do something to ensure that loneliness is a rarity and not the rule. If you would like to find out more about the “Silver Surfer” program, you can find out more on the ISBW website at ISBW.
A community doesn't come into existence on its own - it needs active participation. Let's work together to create a network that leaves no one alone!
For anyone who wants to take part in this important topic, taking part in the storytelling café is a first but important step in the right direction. Information about the event can also be found at Strelitzius and the theoretical basis of the topic Maltese.
