Climate protection in Neuendorf: District plants new tree as a challenge!

On Monday, August 12, 2025, the Mecklenburg Lake District sent a green signal when District Administrator Heiko Kärger and his deputy Thomas Müller planted a tree in Neuendorf as part of the nationwide tree planting challenge. In front of the fire department's technical headquarters (FTZ), the duo dug an apple quince into the ground - a welcome addition to the region's existing fruit trees. During the planting campaign, the politicians expressed their joy at the contribution to climate protection, with Müller seeing the campaign as a real investment in the future. FTZ employees have agreed to take care of the new tree so that it can thrive. The MSE district was previously nominated by the Osnabrück partnership district, which had already planted a chestnut, and is now nominating the Vorpommern-Rügen district to take part in the challenge.

The tree planting challenge enjoys strong participation and attracts numerous players from the region. How daily news reports, companies such as Rinder Allianz in Woldegk and Steffen Media in Friedland have already planted trees. The motto of the challenge is that each participant has to plant a tree within two days and share the campaign on social media. It is also planned to nominate further participants to pass on the green wave. For example, Steffen Media planted an apple tree of the “Jonagold” variety in her orchard. The Diakoniewerkstätten Neubrandenburg and the Torney country butcher shop in Altentreptow have also confirmed their participation as the next participants.

A national concern

The trend towards tree planting not only extends to local initiatives, but can also be found throughout Germany. The tree planting campaign is part of a larger climate protection concern, which also includes organizations such as WWF attach a lot of importance. According to the WWF, protecting and replanting forests is essential to meet the challenges of climate change. It is emphasized that naturally planted forests not only store CO2, but are also more resilient overall. The focus is on converting softwood monocultures into structurally rich, natural forests - a process that not only makes ecological sense, but is also important for the regional economy.

In a climate that is under increasing pressure, the tree planting challenge impressively shows how local politicians and committed citizens can take action together. “There's something going on!” is what the MSE district will probably continue to hear if the participants are motivated to implement their climate activities. The alternatives for a climate-friendly lifestyle are increasing - and the trees we plant today will become our green backbone tomorrow.
