Müritzeum calls for a night expedition: Discover mysterious animals!

A special highlight for night owls is coming soon to the Müritzeum. On June 20th and August 1st, 2025, the Müritzeum will be hosting the exciting catching nights under the motto: “What flies around the Müritzeum garden at night?” Aimed at explorers both young and old, these events promise to unveil the secrets of nocturnal animals, such as Strelitzius reported.

In close collaboration with Dr. Volker Thiele from the Entomological Association and the Müritzeum's environmental educators offer participants a night-time discovery tour. Equipped with light traps, guests immerse themselves in the fascinating world of insects and other nocturnal animal species. These experiences are particularly exciting because the night opens up a completely different side of nature. It offers numerous creatures that become active in the dark - from bats to owls to raccoons.

Nocturnal animals and their adaptations

The world of nocturnal animals is full of surprises and fascinating adaptations. According to a report by Animals Around the Globe There are around 1,400 species of bats worldwide, which are the only mammals that can actually fly. Thanks to their echolocation, they are masters of navigating in the dark.

Owls, on the other hand, impress with their silent flight and excellent night vision. These birds of prey are perfectly adapted to the night to catch rodents and other small animals. Raccoons, with their dexterous front paws and keen night vision, are also commonly found in urban areas, where they play an important role in the ecosystem.

Benefits and challenges of nocturnal activity

Nocturnal animals not only bring advantages, but also face special challenges. How Animal joy explained, the darkness and the special adaptation to this way of life allow for less competition for food and a certain level of protection from predators. But successful hunting in low light and communicating in the dark can also become a challenge.

From a biological point of view, nocturnal animals are of great importance. They act as pollinators and pest controllers and play an important role in the food chain and in soil regeneration. Many native species such as hedgehogs and dormice are also part of this fascinating group, while exotic species such as aye-ayes and tarsiers are particular highlights.

The fishing nights in the Müritzeum offer the ideal setting not only to learn more about these fascinating creatures, but also to become active and experience night-time nature up close. A good reason to invite family and friends and immerse yourself in the mysterious world of the night together!
