Neubrandenburg: City traffic is changing – MVVG takes responsibility!

At the most recent meeting of the Committee for Economy, Construction and District Development, a radical proposal for urban transport in Neubrandenburg was presented. As [NDR] reports, the Mecklenburg Lake District is planning to transfer responsibility for city traffic to the Mecklenburgisch-Western Pomerania Transport Company (MVVG) after the current contract expires. This decision could have a significant impact on bus prices in Neubrandenburg and, above all, relieve the financial situation of passengers.

Currently, traffic matters are in the hands of the Neubrandenburg transport company, which is part of the municipal utilities. The switch to MVVG not only promises cost savings, but also the abolition of the previous dichotomy in local transport. However, this innovation raises some questions, as it is still unclear what possible disadvantages the implementation of this plan could entail. The district council's final decision is still pending.

New regional bus lines on offer

There is also exciting news regarding bus connections in the district. State Secretary Ines Jesse has announced the successful launch of three new regional bus lines, which have been in operation since October 6, 2025. These new lines – 403 (Malchin – Waren), 500 (Neubrandenburg – Friedland) and 619 (Neustrelitz – Feldberg) – are part of an initiative to improve accessibility in rural areas and promote tourism.

The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is supporting the operation of these new lines with a total of around 323,000 euros in the 2025 financial year. The financing is broken down as follows:

line Support (Euro)
403: Malchin – goods approximately 107,000
500: Neubrandenburg – Friedland approximately 90,000
619: Neustrelitz – Feldberg approximately 126,000

These regional bus lines represent a further step in the mobility offensive, which was launched in response to the increasing number of passengers and the associated needs in local public transport. In fact, the regional bus routes that have been operating since December 2023 are already enjoying great popularity, and the numbers speak for themselves: there is a continuous increase in passenger numbers.

A look into the future

The restructuring of local transport in Neubrandenburg could prove to be a real stroke of luck. While the MVVG is already successfully organizing bus services in other parts of the district, the new regional bus routes have the potential to significantly increase the attractiveness of rural areas and facilitate connections to tourist destinations. To support this ambitious project, the state is making around 10.3 million euros available in 2025 to further expand the regional bus network.

The mobility offensive has costs of around 54.5 million euros in the overall budget, which includes not only the operation of the bus routes, but also improvements in rail transport and discounts for trainees and senior citizens. This will actively shape the future of local public transport in the region and set the course for sustainable mobility in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
