New course at the district youth fire department: Paula Szabang elected!

On November 8, 2025, the 13th district youth fire brigade day of the youth fire brigades of the Mecklenburg Lake District took place in the Golm cultural center. Important steps were taken here, as 76 delegates elected Paula Szabang as the new district youth officer. With 62 yes votes, she was able to clearly prevail. Her colleague Marc Fibig was elected third deputy and received 59 yes votes. Both must now be confirmed in their new functions at the next delegate meeting of the Lake District Fire Brigade Association.

Paula Szabang is not entirely unknown: She is a member of the Waren/Müritz fire department and has experience as a department head in the district youth forum and state youth forum M-V. Marc Fibig learned his trade in the Friedland fire department and will also support the team well. The elections took place under the supervision of guests of honor such as the chairman of the district fire brigade association, Stephan Drews.

A moving farewell and plans for the future

Henning Rilka, the acting district youth director, gave a moving speech in which he paid tribute to the previous district youth director Dominik Tramp. Tramp has served since 2004 and leaves big shoes to fill. Greetings from Christian Borchardt, M-V state youth fire brigade warden, were sent via video message, which brought a modern touch to the event. The delegates were visibly moved by the words and the review of the past years.

Youth work in the region is also reflected in statistics: 1,295 young people and 518 children aged six and over are involved in 116 youth fire departments in the Mecklenburg Lake District. What is particularly pleasing is the active participation of 191 girls aged six and over and 497 girls aged ten and over. However, there were also 197 resignations from the youth fire departments. It is positive to note that 77 youth fire brigade members were successfully transferred to the operational departments.

A look at the activities

The event was also a platform to provide information about upcoming challenges and events. This promoted growth and collaboration in various specialist areas. The youth fire brigades will be actively involved in upcoming competitions, such as the district finals in the federal “open water” competition. Eleven youth fire departments and ten children's fire departments will take part, which strengthens community spirit.

The awards that took place on this day are particularly worth mentioning. In total, 83 children's flames (levels 1+2), 143 youth flames (levels 1-3) and 15 performance clasps were awarded by the German Youth Fire Department. There are also other events on the agenda such as the district tent camp and an orienteering run in Neubrandenburg, which provide plenty of variety and team spirit.

A big thank you goes to the community of Miltzow, the office of the MSE district fire brigade association and the DRK Neubrandenburg supply train, who all contributed to making this day a success. The work of youth fire departments is an indispensable part of our society, which not only promotes safety but also cohesion.
