Serious accident on B198: Senior overlooks car with two children!
A serious traffic accident occurred on Monday afternoon on the B198 near Röbel. How Northern Courier reported that around 3:15 p.m. two vehicles collided at the intersection with the L241. An 83-year-old driver of a Hyundai wanted to cross the intersection towards Priborn and overlooked a VW that had the right of way.
A 40-year-old woman from Mirow was traveling in the VW, who was sitting in the car with her two children, 13 and 8 years old. While the children fortunately remained uninjured, the mother was seriously injured and had to be flown in a rescue helicopter to the Neubrandenburg Clinic, where she was hospitalized. The 83-year-old only suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance.
Consequences of the accident
The children were handed over to their father's care at the scene of the accident. Both vehicles were no longer drivable due to the collision and then had to be towed away. The rescue work and the closure of the intersection took around two hours, while the total damage is estimated at around 20,000 euros.
Older drivers, like the 83-year-old in this case, are often exposed to particular risks on the road. A study by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) shows that older people are less likely to be involved in accidents with personal injuries, but an increase in the number of people involved in accidents among this age group is to be expected due to demographic developments. Groups particularly at risk are often active seniors who may be at increased risk of accidents if, for example, they lead a varied lifestyle. These findings underline the need to sensitize older drivers to specific dangers and to develop targeted road safety measures, as the BASt found in its study. bast emphasizes that tailored forms of approach are required.
Legal aspects
Legal aspects in connection with accidents involving emergency vehicles are also important. A recent ruling by the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court shows that both a car and an emergency ambulance that was driving with flashing lights can be held liable for a traffic accident if both parties have breached their duty of care. This ruling is particularly relevant because it makes it clear that although emergency vehicles are exempt from road traffic regulations, road safety always has priority. ADAC reports a similar case in which both parties had to be liable for 50 percent of the damage caused by the accident.
This incident in Röbel is not only a tragic reminder of the dangers in road traffic, but also a call for caution, especially in intersection areas, which often pose an increased risk of accidents. It is important for all road users to drive particularly carefully and responsibly in order to avoid such serious accidents in the future.
