Serious accident in Röbel: 40-year-old injured, senior driver worried!

On Monday, August 11, 2025, a serious traffic accident between two cars occurred at around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of B 198 and L 241 in Röbel. An 83-year-old driver of a Hyundai overlooked the 40-year-old driver of a VW who had the right of way in the priority area, which led to a serious collision. While the driver of the VW was seriously injured and flown to Neubrandenburg Hospital in a rescue helicopter, the older Hyundai driver and his two children traveling with him, a 13-year-old and an 8-year-old, also suffered injuries, which were, however, classified as minor.

The accident site had to be closed for around two hours in order to carry out the rescue work. Both vehicles were no longer drivable and had to be towed away. The total property damage is estimated at around 20,000 euros. All people involved are German nationals, which reinforces the picture of the accident situation at this busy intersection, as older and younger road users collided here.

A look at the causes of accidents

The incident raises legitimate questions about the road safety of older drivers. loud ADAC Reactions and eyesight can decrease with age, which can potentially lead to danger in traffic. Older road users are more often those at risk than those who cause accidents. This problem is also reflected in the accident statistics: people aged 65 and over only caused 18.5% of accidents with personal injury in 2023, even though they make up 22% of the population. The majority of seriously injured road users from this age group die, especially among Pedelec users.

In accidents like the one in Röber, reality forces us to think critically about our own driving ability. Experts like Ulrich Chiellino from the ADAC warn against drawing general conclusions about the suitability of older drivers and emphasize that health and experience are much more important for road safety. The association recommends regular medical examinations, especially for eyesight, in order to detect health problems in good time.

Offers of assistance for older road users

In order to support active older road users, the ADAC offers various programs, such as the “Driving Fitness Check”, which aims to optimize driving style and identify potential for improvement. The “Safely Mobile” program is aimed specifically at seniors and helps them learn new driving techniques and navigate safely in traffic. The decision to continue behind the wheel should always be carefully considered and based on an honest self-assessment of your own abilities.

Any support will certainly be important for the injured VW driver and her family in the coming days. Dealing with the consequences of such an accident is a major challenge. We hope that everyone affected gets back on their feet soon.
