Dispute over wind power: Citizens in Altentreptow fear field of ruins!
Wind power planning is up for debate in the city of Altentreptow. Northern Courier reports that an information evening was recently held to partially update the wind energy area planning in the Mecklenburg Lake District. Concerned residents from Altentreptow and the surrounding communities expressed their concerns and questions about the wind power projects.
The pressure is high because at least 2.1% of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's area must be designated for wind energy by 2032. However, the region is currently far below this target, with an area share of only 0.8%. By 2027, 1.4% of the space must be available. The residents are worried because large parts of the district are unsuitable for development due to water, moors and biological reserves, which further complicates planning.
Citizen participation and co-determination
The participation process for planning wind power areas has now reached the second phase, in which citizens can express their concerns. In the third phase, statements are only taken into account if changes occur that cause new concerns. These framework conditions cause resentment among citizens who have the feeling that their opinions are not taken seriously and that participation is inadequate.
Peter Seifert, head of the planning association's office, assured that all statements will be checked by the nature conservation authority. As part of the reassessment, old wind turbines will also be replaced with more modern models, a process known as “repowering”. While the new wind turbines generate electricity more efficiently, it remains unclear what will happen to the decommissioned systems.
City policies and regulations
In order to take the concerns of the population seriously, the Altentreptow city council has decided to impose a ban on changes to the planned “Altentreptow Süd wind farm”. Until a development plan is drawn up, nothing should be built on the site. Mayor Gerhard Quast emphasizes that this unanimous decision was made across party groups in order to take the citizens' fears seriously and give them more say. It is desired to avoid uncontrolled wild growth when building new wind turbines, as shown daily news can be read.
New laws for citizen participation
At the same time, the red-red state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is planning a new citizen and community participation law for wind power and solar energy. Loud NDR In the future, affected citizens within a radius of 2.5 kilometers from wind farms will be entitled to financial compensation. This law aims to involve citizens more closely as a suitable area for renewable energies by the end of 2032 and to increase financial participation.
Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig understands wind power opponents and at the same time emphasizes the necessity of wind power for energy independence. Citizens should therefore not only benefit from the financial benefits generated by higher taxes from operators of wind power and solar parks, but should also be actively involved in the planning and implementation of the projects.
With the planned measures and the announced changes, the situation remains exciting. Citizens will keep a close eye on developments to ensure that their concerns are adequately taken into account in wind power planning.
