On Tuesday, November 3, 2025, Chancellor Friedrich Merz is planning a visit to Manuela Schwesig, Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The main topic of this meeting is the urgently needed Wolgast bypass and the planned bridge over the Peene to the Baltic Sea island of Usedom. This particularly concerns the financing of the road construction project, which is of great importance for the region. In this context, CDU state leader Daniel Peters emphasizes how important Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is economically for the Federal Republic. He calls for a real relief program for small and medium-sized companies as well as relief from bureaucratic hurdles.
In his speech, Peters also emphasized the need for a thorough reform of economic development. In doing so, he encountered criticism, both towards the procurement law and the negative headlines from the state tourism association. In response to the challenges in the tourism sector, the state government has set up its own tourism GmbH to give new impetus to the tourism sector in regions such as Rügen, Usedom, the Baltic Sea and the Lake District.
Tourism and personal responsibility
Tourism is a central pillar for the economy of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and has a major influence on jobs and regional development. In this context, Peters calls for more responsibility from the state government in order to reduce dependence on federal funds. “It is high time that we take the initiative for our own concerns,” he says.
The discussion about the tourism association is also made more difficult by the fact that it is repeatedly affected by negative headlines. While tourism is expected to flourish in the region, those responsible are under pressure to rethink and adapt their strategies. Innovative approaches that go far beyond previous measures are all the more in demand.
The meeting between Merz and Schwesig could be a decisive step, not only for the infrastructure, but also for strengthening the economic base of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. An aspiring federal state that wants to act as a bridge between the continent and the Baltic Sea must take the right measures to actively shape the future.
Ultimately, a lot depends on whether those responsible manage to put their plans into action while at the same time withstanding pressure from within and outside. Regional tourism is not only a factor for the economy, but also part of the quality of life in the state - and this must be ensured.
