In the heart of Stralsund, where life never completely calms down, there are people who support their fellow human beings around the clock. Emily Fieblinger, a 20-year-old nursing assistant, has just started her night shift at the local nursing hotel. Her shift starts at 6:30 p.m. and during the night she is solely responsible for 18 patients. These patients usually only stay in the facility temporarily, often after operations or injuries. The care hotel is part of the welfare facilities of the Hanseatic City of Stralsund and offers a total of 18 places for short-term and preventative care. There are around eight such facilities active in the region with a total of 500 residents and 360 nursing staff, reports ndr.de.
Emily's work becomes particularly challenging when she encounters confused residents who need support with their situation. “Mindfulness is key,” she emphasizes, especially when it comes to pressure points. She carefully documents every act of care after the patient has been cared for. Despite the high level of responsibility she carries, Emily loves her job. She sees it as her job to give older people courage and give them back some quality of life.
The challenges in care
In Germany, the nursing profession is more in demand than ever. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of people over 80 will increase by 40 percent by 2030. At the same time, there is a nationwide shortage of around 50,000 nursing staff. This not only pushes existing employees to their limits, but also requires creative solutions to meet future needs.
