550,000 euros for Johannstorf Castle: Historical building in danger!
The ruin of the Johannstorf Castle, located at Dassow in Northwest Mecklenburg, is facing a crucial turn. Due to a symbolic check that was presented to Mayor Sascha Kuhfuß on July 2, 2025, 550,000 euros now flow into the emergency protection of the historic building. These funds were provided by the German Foundation for Monument Protection to preserve the listed castle from further damage caused by a devastating fire in March 2025, in which the roof structure burned almost completely.
The Johannstorf Castle, which is known as the only baroque "Wasserschloss" in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, was built in 1743 for the Lübeck canon Schack von Buchwald. Over the years, the building changed the owner several times and temporarily served as accommodation for refugees after the Second World War. In the 1990s the castle stood empty and fell into account.
necessary security measures
The planned work for the emergency roof installation includes the construction of a makeshift bridge, since the existing bridge is no longer viable in view of the construction crane. After the carefully removed parts of the castle, a comprehensive analysis of the condition of the building is carried out. The aim of the measures is to prevent greater damage and to secure the building for possible future use, even if there are currently no concrete plans.
The facade of the castle that was preserved shows rustled pilasters and pastel yellow window frames. The massive, two -storey brick building is located on a former baroque park island and represents a striking ensemble of regional architecture. The interiors were provided with valuable equipment features, such as stucco ceilings and marble fireplaces, many of which were irretrievably lost due to the flames.
Cooperation to save the monument
In addition to the German Foundation for Monument Protection, the city of Dassow, the district of Nordwestmecklenburg and the "Historical Houses" initiative work closely together to save the castle. The need for an emergency roof is urgent, because the estimated costs exceed the funds already awarded and could be over 500,000 euros.
The castle not only has historical importance, but also became known for the film "The White Band" and attracts both residents and tourists. All of these challenges and orders could therefore be the key to make a historic piece of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shine in new splendor. An exciting time for Johannstorf is imminent.
