Chaos in Sassnitz: Sailing event requires special permits!
When the waves hit the coast of Sassnitz, things will get serious on August 16th and 17th, 2025: The popular sailing series SailGP stops off on the Baltic Sea. As Uckermark Kurier reports, the city of Rügen is not only expecting numerous spectators, but also major logistical challenges. To ensure everything runs smoothly, a temporary traffic and parking concept will be implemented on site.
What does this mean specifically for everyone who wants to arrive at the weekend? From August 16th to 17th, entry via the B96 (Lancken intersection), Dorfstraße, Mukraner Straße and L303 (Werder) between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. is only possible with a special permit. Despite this restriction, the residents of Sassnitz can leave the city at any time, while driving within Sassnitz remains largely possible. The exit remains unhindered, which will certainly make some people breathe a sigh of relief.
Delicate traffic regulations
If you think it's just about the roads, you're wrong: traffic is also regulated on waterways. The harbor passage between RügenFisch and the water police is completely closed from July 28th to August 29th. There are also temporary closures on upper Hafenstrasse and lower Strasse der Jugend, which will be closed to vehicle traffic on August 16th and 17th from 10 a.m. to around 7 p.m. Merkelstrasse will remain closed until the end of the year.
For those who arrive by car, there will be parking options at various points such as Dwasieden, Kistenplatz and the vocational school from August 16th, but these can only be used with a valid parking ticket from the organizer. If you don't have a parking ticket, you can use two parking spaces with a shuttle service in Mukran, where the buses drive towards Rügen-Platz from 10 a.m., as Wolff Vision describes.
Shuttle and further information
The local transport organization VVR is providing free shuttle buses and ensuring that all lines follow their regular routes, except bus route 18, which will not serve certain port stops between August 16th and 29th. So it is advisable to keep an eye on the bus schedule so as not to encounter any surprises.
A highlight of the event will be a “green event” in which Team Germany will also be the focus. Spectators can look forward to an attractive program that focuses on the team and the competitions. Information about this is available directly from those responsible in Sassnitz and from local media.
The competition on the water
There are also clear guidelines for shipping. During the event there will be exclusively marked zones reserved for training and racing the F50 catamarans. From August 11th to 17th, boats should exercise caution, especially when approaching the city harbor, as the water police will also be increasingly present here to regulate traffic.
Important to know: Despite the massive restrictions, local excursion boats remain in operation. However, departure times and locations should be requested from the respective operators to guarantee a smooth day on the water.
Overall, it shows that the SailGP event in Sassnitz is not only top-class in terms of sport, but also requires a good hand in organization in order to do justice to everyone involved. It will definitely be an exciting weekend for the organizers, the police and all road users.
