Hansa Rostock celebrates 60 years of football history in an exciting exhibition!
The atmosphere in the Kunsthalle Rostock is electric in light of FC Hansa Rostock's 60th birthday. With over 5,500 visitors in the first month alone, the exhibition “Round & Square – Sometimes Dirty” recorded a respectable turnout. This impressive exhibition extends over 2000 square meters and presents the multi-faceted history of the association, complemented by installations, photos and videos. Every step through the halls tells stories of highs and lows in football.
A particularly emotional highlight is a jersey with the words “Pagelsdorf” that belongs to Jens Strohschein from Schlagsdorf. The 59-year-old Hansa fan and former coach of the D-Juniors has a very special connection to this jersey, which was donated to the D-Juniors by coach Frank Pagelsdorf in the 1990s. In these jerseys, the D-Juniors even won the district championship in northwest Mecklenburg - little big stories that make football so exciting. Nordkurier reports about the rarity of these jerseys - only two still exist in the world, one of which is in the exhibition.
A tribute to fan culture
The exhibition also offers insights into the dynamic fan culture that has grown in German football over the last few decades. What was once sparse support has turned into a hustle and bustle with intense chants and passionate support for the team. This fan engagement has been a central part of football history, especially since the founding of the Bundesliga in 1963, which fundamentally changed the fan landscape. Planet knowledge describes how identification with clubs through scarves, flags and robes changed with new stadiums and the establishment of a broader fan culture.
Contemporary witnesses also have their say in the art gallery and shed light on political and social issues in the context of football. The exhibition not only addresses the joyful aspects, but also the challenges and dark sides of professional football. Artists like Birgit Brenner and Hans Ticha bring in their perspectives and make the exhibition a multi-layered experience.
Emotions and memories
The visitors' reactions are overwhelming. Luisa Loebbert from the Kunsthalle mentions that a lot of emotional feedback can be heard - be it from die-hard fans or from new visitors who have had little contact with the club so far. The Rostock Art Gallery offers a space in which memories and passion come to life.
Jens Strohschein, who went down in history as the “Needle Man,” tells a special anecdote from the club’s history. He placed two needles in the turf of the Ostseestadion before a crucial home game against VfB Stuttgart, which marked the end of a losing streak and the beginning of a positive streak for FC Hansa. These small rituals, it turns out, are part of the bigger picture – the passionate, often emotional world of football.
What will the future bring? Jens Strohschein is optimistic and has confidence in current coach Daniel Brinkmann that he will lead FC Hansa Rostock into the Second Bundesliga. Apart from Jürgen Klinsmann, hopes are now placed on the young players and the coaching team.
Overall, the exhibition offers a deep insight into the development and culture of FC Hansa Rostock and invites all football enthusiasts to become part of this exciting journey through the 60-year history of a traditional club.
