Mast break shock: Brazil is missing from the first SailGP in Sassnitz!

Last weekend, the picturesque coastal town of Sassnitz on Rügen was the venue for the first SailGP in Germany. The event, which took place on Saturday and Sunday at 3:30 p.m., promised exciting competitions at a high level. But instead of the originally twelve catamarans that started, the starting field had to be reduced to eleven teams: Team Mubadala Brazil, led by the renowned sailor Martine Grael, was unable to compete due to a tragic mast break. This was a major setback for the Brazilian team, who had previously struggled with a rig failure during training off Bermuda. Fortunately, the sailors were uninjured in both incidents.

The F50 foiler's mast failure not only caused disappointment in the Brazilian team, but also increased competition among the remaining teams. The world-class crews from New Zealand, Australia, Spain and Great Britain are very popular among the favorites. The German team, currently in eleventh place in the championship standings at the time of the competitive fifth SailGP season, was determined to perform better and delight the home crowd.

SailGP in New York

In New York there were five different winners in the six fleet races, which increased the dynamic of the competition. Unfortunately, despite good performances in the fleet races, Team Mubadala Brazil was unable to advance to the finals, where they ultimately finished in eleventh place. Another unfortunate circumstance for the Brazilians that underlines their early elimination in the world's largest water sports event.

Looking to the future

Even though the atmosphere in Sassnitz was dominated by the Brazilian team's disappointment, the competitions are generating a lot of excitement and anticipation for the next events, such as the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix, scheduled for July 19 and 20, 2025. Given our achievements so far, we can look forward to more exciting competitions in SailGP!
