There is currently a lot going on in the area of refugee accommodation in northwest Mecklenburg. In Selmsdorf and Gadebusch, construction work on new container villages is nearing completion, and both accommodations are scheduled to be put into operation from October 2023. According to the Ostsee-Zeitung ostsee-zeitung.de in Selmsdorf Up to 100 refugees and in Gadebusch even 146 people were accommodated, so a real financial hit for the communities.
Development work is already underway in Gadebusch. The first containers are already in place and the foundations are in progress. Planning permission has also already been granted for Selmsdorf and its location next to the sports field makes access easier for residents who may have concerns. Overall, the number of refugees who need to be accommodated in northwest Mecklenburg will increase as a result of these two new facilities.
Dispute over Upahl
Residents of Upahl had fought against the containers with protests of up to 700 participants, and the municipality even took legal action against the district. Although they lost against the building permit in the first instance, the conflict over the refugee accommodation in Upahl is far from over.
