Cycle path between Selmsdorf and Schönberg: Safety required for cyclists!

In the Northwest Mecklenburg region, the call for safe cycle paths is becoming louder and louder. The residents of the B 104 in particular point out that cycling along the busy road represents a great danger. The mayor of Selmsdorf, Marcus Kreft, describes the situation as worrying, with high traffic volumes involving thousands of vehicles, including trucks and tractors, every day. Cyclists traveling on the dangerous section from Selmsdorf to Schönberg are at considerable risk not only from the narrow road, but also from curves and the placement of trees. At the same time, the residents of Löwitz are also calling for a cycle path to Rehna and emphasize that the B 104 is not a safe place for cyclists, as countless vehicles use it every day.

The need for a cycle path between Selmsdorf and Schönberg has been discussed in the community for several years. According to Kreft, there are plans to extend the cycle path over 3.5 kilometers in order to offer both Schönberger High School students and other residents a safe transport connection. Mayor Lutz Götze of Schönberg is also optimistic that this cycle path will also benefit commuters from Schönberg to Lübeck. Baltic Sea newspaper reports that the municipality has offered to support the state in purchasing the property. These measures are urgently needed so that cyclists can overcome the “bottleneck” situation that arises when they want to cycle from Lübeck to Selmsdorf and on to Rehna or Schwerin.

Safe routes instead of accidents

The situation is tense because the existing alternatives are still far from an optimal solution. Resident Gunnar Weber describes the detours that cyclists have to take for greater safety. The “detour along a commercial route” is described by many as “hell” – characterized by difficult conditions that often lead to flat tires and accidents. Gritt Roock and Maik Juncker emphasize that this danger exists not only for adults, but also for children. They are demanding a quick solution from the authorities so that safety on the roads can be increased. Northern Courier reports on a planned renovation of a cycle path between Nesow and Rehna, which the angry residents consider to be insufficient, while they long for a new cycle path to be built.

The MV State Office for Road Construction and Transport is currently planning the cycle path between Selmsdorf and Schönberg as well as the urgently needed permits. The planned construction of the cycle path is to be firmly anchored in the prioritization concept for new construction on federal roads for 2023 to 2027, but exact information on the start of construction is still pending. Furthermore, an empty pipe for future heat supply may be laid as part of the construction project.

Comparison with other projects

If you compare the situation on the B 104 with the plans for other cycle paths in the area, there are different levels of progress. Plans for a cycle path between Stoffersdorf and Gägelow on the B 105 are already well advanced, and a possible start of construction is being discussed in 2025/26. Nevertheless, there are also critical voices here from Martina Czwikla from ADFC Wismar who criticize the dangers for cyclists and also call for a cycle path. Czwikla is optimistic about the gaps between Löwitz and Rehna, which are to be closed in 2026, and the section from Dassow to Grevesmühlen, which is to be tackled between 2028 and 2032.

One thing is clear: the residents of Seehren and Löwitz are urgently waiting for solutions that offer them a safe and carefree journey. The creation of cycle paths could not only ensure greater safety, but also help to make cycling in the region more attractive and put an end to the horror that dangerous road conditions bring.
