Record participation in autumn cleaning: citizens pitch in together!

A fresh wind blew through the streets of the Sarov community at the weekend when over 80 citizens came together for a major autumn cleaning. Mayor Thomas Wellenbeck reported that participants from the surrounding towns of Ganschendorf, Gehmkow, Sarow and Törpin actively took part in the community campaign, which has developed into a popular tradition in recent years. Even though weeds initially overgrew the roadsides and cracks in the pavement, the villagers are now showing that a lot can be achieved together. The campaign, which began in spring 2024 in preparation for the local elections, has since developed a broad citizens' movement in all four villages.

“It was just great to see how many of you came,” said Wellenbeck. The commitment of the citizens was remarkable. In brilliant weather, the participants dedicated themselves to various clean-up tasks for three hours. From scratching and sweeping to cutting and clearing to collecting leaves - there was something for everyone. Hundreds of sacks and big packs were filled with the fallen leaves and the rubbish was transported away in wheelbarrows. Even the community cemetery in Gehmkow was cleared of its leaves. A coherent image of the community of citizens that shows what can be achieved together.

Tackle and celebrate together

The commitment of the Sarow youth fire brigade, which actively participated in the autumn cleaning, was particularly pleasing. Wellenbeck emphasized their support and acknowledged the enthusiasm of the young helpers. After the work was done, a get-together was organized where the participants reflected on the day over bratwurst and homemade salads. “This is how civic engagement works!” was the unanimous response of those present.

The increased interest in such campaigns cannot only be observed locally. In many communities and cities, the activities of citizens are a sign of social and cultural stability. Civic engagement has its place everywhere – from clubs to initiatives to church projects. Even today it is clear that commitment, often voluntary and without financial compensation, always contributes to the well-being of the community. Social Bremen describes that the number of clubs and citizen groups can be seen as a measure of the vitality of a municipality.

The participants in the autumn cleaning agreed: Spring cleaning will also take place next year. Working together not only cleared the streets of leaves, but also strengthened togetherness in the community. And that is exactly what committed citizens are – they not only lend a hand, but also contribute to a good coexistence.
