Terrible bicycle accidents on the coast: two seriously injured!
Last weekend there were two serious bicycle accidents in Boltenhagen, which once again raise the question of safety on the cycle paths. A 60-year-old woman fell in Niendorf an der Wohlenberger Wiek and unfortunately died from serious head injuries. At the same time, a man suffered several broken bones on the cliffs near Redewisch and had to be flown to a clinic in a rescue helicopter. These incidents alerted the volunteers from the Boltenhagen Volunteer Fire Department, who responded immediately to both accidents. While the fire brigade in Niendorf was called upon to help with resuscitation, at the second scene of the accident they had to walk 340 meters through a grain field to reach the injured man. A logistical challenge that was fortunately overcome with the support of 16 emergency services who transported medical equipment.
The military leader Sebastian Hacker drew attention to an alarming fact: Many e-bikes encourage older people in particular to get on two wheels. However, this can lead to dangerous situations, especially on unsuitable cycle paths. The path on which the man fell on the cliff was not an official cycle path, but a private trail that is in a precarious condition due to rain and wear. Hacker therefore recommends wearing helmets and emphasizes the importance of locking the bike securely. He also pointed out the dangers of the cliffs, where weather conditions such as heavy rain or storms can lead to crashes.
The numbers don't lie
The current statistics are alarming: In 2024, 441 cyclists were killed in traffic, 192 of whom were Pedelec users. The 11.4% increase in cyclist deaths since 2014 is particularly worrying when it comes to e-bikes. According to a survey by Destatis, e-bikes pose an increasing danger because they are often heavier and more wobbly in borderline situations. Considering that 63.5% of fatally injured cyclists were 65 years of age or older, it is clear that the safety of our senior citizens should be a top priority.
According to Siegfried Brockmann from the insurers' accident research department, a high proportion of bicycle accidents can be attributed solely to uncontrolled e-bikers. Many cyclists underestimate their abilities and their own safety, which leads to overconfidence and ultimately serious accidents. It's no wonder that infrastructure plays a crucial role: poor cycle paths contribute significantly to the accident scenario, in which collisions with cars also play a role.
Safety comes first
In light of these incidents and the statistical data, it is clear that it is high time to improve safety on our cycle paths. Hacker points out that some fire departments on the coast use ATVs for hard-to-reach areas in order to respond quickly. It is everyone's responsibility to ensure that cycling is safe even in critical situations. It is all the more important that the older generation in particular acts responsibly and wears the right protective equipment.
Recent events and the increasing number of bicycle accidents call for measures and better information to prevent accidents in the future. The responsibility lies not only with the cyclists themselves, but also with the infrastructure and the decision-makers who have to create safe conditions.
