Call for donations for Nobsi the cat: suffering and hope in the Wismar animal shelter!

A sad but also moving story comes from the Dorf Mecklenburg animal shelter near Wismar. Tomcat “Nobsi” has developed into a special case that is attracting the attention of animal lovers and donors alike. “Nobsi” suffers from a fractured hip joint and had to spend several weeks in a box. The head of the cats and small animals department at the animal shelter, Esther Sohn, reports on his “erratic behavior,” which makes it difficult to pick him up. Aggressiveness could possibly be triggered by the pain he still feels.

After an operation, he is now housed in an outdoor enclosure, but the treatment costs add up to around 1,500 euros. The painkillers that “Nobsi” needs are also expensive. That's why the animal shelter started a fundraising campaign to raise the necessary funds for his treatment. “Nobsi” has been in the facility since May last year and still has no tail, which is probably a disability since birth. Esther Sohn also suspects that he has been mistreated in the past, which is particularly evident in his behavior towards men.

Looking for a home for “Nobsi”.

The hope remains that “Nobsi’s” behavior will normalize after the hip operation. Until then, the cat needs a lot of activity - he likes to chase balls, stuffed animals and even a household item. In order to give “Nobsi” the opportunity to develop, a new home is being sought. Keeping him alone would be ideal, as his gross motor behavior could overwhelm a herd of cats. Experienced cat owners without children and with a large, secured balcony are targeted as potential new “can openers”.

It is difficult to generalize how animal-friendly the regulations regarding found animals are in Germany. In some federal states such as Schleswig-Holstein there are specific guidelines that emphasize the welfare of animals. If an animal is found, it is considered lost until proven otherwise. This regulation is not uniform nationwide and is subject to different interpretations depending on the municipality. In North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, the municipalities decide independently, although there are often no clear procedural instructions, as can be seen from the report by Tierschutzunion.

The legal framework for found animals

The Animal Protection Act and the Basic Law attach great importance to animal protection. According to Article 20a GG, the state has the responsibility to take animal protection into account. Found animals must be looked after by the relevant authorities; this is one of the essential points in German animal protection law. These laws aim to clearly assign responsibility and state that paid medical treatments must be covered by the fund authorities. The legal framework for this is broken down in detail in Legal questions regarding found animals.

In order to draw attention to the fate of “Nobsi” and to support him to some extent, donations are very welcome. Anyone who would like to help can transfer money to the following accounts:
