Dispute over wind turbines: Wismar is struggling with construction delays and graduation celebrations!

There seems to be a lot going on in Wismar! The city has invested heavily in its cruise terminal and is increasingly attracting large ships. A highlight is the Disney cruise ship“Disney Adventures”, which will leave Wismar on August 30th to store fuel in Mukran before setting off on the much-anticipated maiden voyage to Singapore. How ostsee-zeitung.de reports, the ship is a big attraction that may cause more of a stir in the port city.

For the cruise season, the city and country also have around8 million eurosput into the cruise dock to accommodate more ships like“Seabourn Quest”and“MS America”to attract. The latter had recently visited Wismar and the shipping company paid around 1,000 for the stay17,000 euros. However, retailers and restaurants report fewer guest trips during cruise visits - Wismar should perhaps sharpen this up a bit.

Criticism of the infrastructure and air quality

Despite the positive signs, there are also comments about the current infrastructure in Wismar. There have recently been delays in the construction of a new shopping center on Schweriner Straße, where there are no charging ports for electric cars. The cycle path through the Dreweswäldchen is currently closed. According to the report on ostsee-zeitung.de Some construction sites remain problematic, including two piles of dirt that may be contaminated. This shows that despite the progress in the port infrastructure, Wismar still has to contend with some challenges.

However, environmentalists view it particularly critically: cruise ships not only bring guests, but also their own challenges. How ndr.de explained, they cause air pollution through emissions and lack a shore power system to minimize emissions. The last two ships even had to temporarily dock outside the port because construction work prevented them from docking.

The local population and their needs

Wismar is also seeing a decline in the overall population, while the Wendorf district is considered attractive, with the highest number of residents aged 65 and over. In order not to lose sight of the needs of the population, onJuly 18thAt the IGS “Johann Wolfgang von Goethe” the Abitur certificates are awarded. The class of 2025 has achieved remarkable achievements - with an overall grade point average of2.4and the best grade of1.6.

Although there are plans for three wind turbines in Maßlow, the project is facing opposition from some. Critics feel they are not being taken seriously and the project has already been rejected in committees. Most recently, a fire in a straw bale press in a field in Falkenhagen prevented another setback, which caused damage amounting to200,000 euroscaused.

Overall, it remains to be seen how Wismar will deal with the challenges of cruise tourism and internal developments. The pressure on the city is growing to simultaneously create an attractive ambience for tourists without neglecting the needs of the locals.
