35 years of the German-Japanese Society: A festival of culture in Rostock!
A big birthday is celebrated in a big way in the Hanseatic city of Rostock. The German-Japanese Society Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Rostock e.V. celebrates its 35th anniversary today, July 2, 2025. The association was founded in 1990 at the initiative of a delegation of Japanese merchants from Kyoto to strengthen cultural ties between the two countries.
The association's annual highlights include a variety of events that properly honor Japanese culture. Especially that Cherry blossom festival in IGA Park and the Rostock Bonsai Days in the Nikolaikirche are in the events calendar. A special highlight for photography lovers is the current photo exhibition “JAPAN Face to Face” by the renowned photographer Hans Sautter, which can be visited in the Nikolaikirche until July 26th. Here visitors can enjoy exclusive insights into the land of the rising sun.
Cultural challenges and commitment
But despite the enthusiasm for the cultural projects, the association continues to encounter challenges. According to club representatives, financing cultural projects is one of the biggest hurdles because the costs are often in the five-figure range. Every year the association receives support of 2,000 to 5,000 euros from the city of Rostock. Despite this help, the number of members has remained constant at 50 volunteers since it was founded, and the association has the clear goal of inspiring more young people to become members.
Another beautiful occasion to commemorate Japanese culture will take place on August 17, 2025 at the EKO House in Düsseldorf. Families with children who cannot travel to Japan this summer are welcome to attend Shichi Go San Festival invited. There will be a commemorative photo shoot there that is specifically designed to celebrate the healthy growth of children in Germany. Registration options for dressing assistance, photography and ceremony are offered. Dressing times begin at 12:30 p.m. and are scheduled every half hour.
A look forward
In summary, the connection between Germany and Japan continues to be strong and there are many interesting events on the agenda. The association in Rostock and the festival in Düsseldorf impressively show how culture can build bridges, even across thousands of kilometers. In today's global world, such networking is more important than ever, and Rostock is setting a good example.
