GDR rarity: 82-year-old has been using kitchen machine for 40 years!

In a small nostalgic moment from the past, 82-year-old Hans-Joachim Adrian in Warnemünde is enjoying his food processor, which has been loyal to his side for almost 40 years. This special machine, a aka-Varioblock , comes from VEB electrical engineering Suhl, one of the most important manufacturers of household appliances The GDR. As a passionate potato buffer lover, Adrian always has the machine in continuous use and swears by its reliability.

Back then, in December 1986, when the machine was sold in the Center department store in Rostock, Adrian and his wife stood in line early. Only ten copies were offered on this specific day, and they are sure that the price of the device was anything but low in GDR times. This piece of technology was rare and the valuable asset was also considered a status symbol.

a piece of history in everyday life

The Aka Varioblock kitchen machine was marketed under the umbrella brand " Aka Electric ", which stood in the household for quality and reliability. In 1969, a total of 15 manufacturers of household electronics merged under the term associations of state -owned companies in the GDR in order to meet electrical consumer goods in order to cover the consumption needs of the population. The machines and devices of AKA were used in many households and enjoyed great popularity.

The combination VEB electrical appliance plant Suhl, where Adrian's machine was manufactured, was a prime example of the GDR's planned economy and employed up to 10,000 people in the period before the turn. With a product range from vacuum cleaners to kitchen machines to small electrical devices, they contributed significantly to the equipment of households. The machines were not only functional, but also reflected the zeitgeist and technological possibilities.

nostalgia and memories

The old kitchen machine has only needed minimal repairs over the years, such as soldering a defective snow strawl or fixing a broken cable. Adrian and his wife never thought of replacing the best piece with modern devices. "Why? She works perfectly and does the best potato buffer," says Adrian with a smile and at the same time looks at another GDR treasure in his possession: an alcolor alcohol tester that has been on his side for around 50 years. The tester, rare and in demand in the GDR, has now found its place as a nostalgic memorial.

When Adrian puts the machine into operation, it not only indulges in memories, but also brings taste back to its current life. "A piece of home on the plate," he describes his passion. This small but loyal kitchen aid has firmly anchored its place in the history and heart of its owner.
