Digital get-together for seniors: Experience security online!
What is happening in the heart of Rostock? An exciting event for seniors is just around the corner! The next digital get-together will take place on Monday, July 21, 2025. Organized by the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Volunteer Foundation, the Evangelical Church of Warnemünde and the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) Rostock, the event invites you to the community hall of the Evangelical Church in Warnemünde, Kirchenplatz 4, from 10.30 a.m. The focus is on refreshing knowledge about the digital world and informing you about risks and scams that lurk in the online world. The city administration's digital offerings are also discussed.
The goal? Promote security online and more mobility for older people! The event is free of charge, although donations for the hosts and the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) are welcome. Not only are open questions about topics such as smartphone use answered here, but also the review of Digital Day, which took place on June 27th, is discussed. Such initiatives are important because they not only support older people in the digital world, but also in actively participating in social life.
Education and digital skills in old age
The Federal Ministry for Senior Citizens confirms how important education and digital skills are for older people. It specifically supports seniors in taking advantage of the advantages of digitalization. Online banking, booking doctor's appointments and video calls are just some of the offers that make everyday life much easier. “DigitalPakt Alter” and “Digitaler Engel PLUS” are projects that aim to make digital technologies comprehensively accessible and to impart the necessary knowledge. Care is taken to ensure that the opportunities do not depend on gender, level of education or place of residence - everyone should be able to benefit, regardless of their previous knowledge.
In this context, the Digital Opportunities Foundation has published the guide “Digital Skills for Older People”. This guide not only offers instructions, but also examples for planning needs-based offers. Nowadays, competent use of digital media is essential in order to be able to actively participate in social life. In addition to media literacy, it is also important that older people gain confidence in their own abilities so that they can see the use of digital media as a matter of course.
Opportunities of digitalization
Digitalization offers many opportunities that can promote the well-being and health of older people. The ESF-Plus funding program “Education and Commitment for a Lifetime” (BELL), which starts on April 1, 2025, is expected to represent a further step in this direction. Initiatives such as the Internet portal Wissendurstig, which provides event databases and materials, help older people find their way better in today's digital world.
The upcoming digital get-together on July 21, 2025 is not only a nice occasion, but also a valuable opportunity to learn more about the digital world and stay active in it. We cordially invite all interested seniors!
