Digitization in Germany: Hope vs. Fear - this is how citizens think!
Especially at a time that is characterized by rapid technological changes, it becomes clear how important understanding and participation in the digital world are. A current report by the Rathaus Rostock For digital participation in Germany, shows that most Germans are positive about digitization, but at the same time also perceive significant worries and challenges.
As part of a study carried out on the occasion of the digital day, 1,004 Germans aged 16 and over gave interesting insights into their settings for digitization. 86 percent of the respondents generally see digitization positively. It is particularly noteworthy that 85 percent of German digital technologies perceive in everyday life. But where there is light, there is often also shadow: 40 percent feel overwhelmed by digital devices and applications and 44 percent are afraid of not being able to follow the technical development.
skepticism towards artificial intelligence
The survey also addressed the attitude towards artificial intelligence. While 75 percent consider AI as an opportunity, 24 percent see it more as a threat to society. 61 percent would like a social discussion about this technology. It is exciting that 49 percent of Germans want to learn more about artificial intelligence, which indicates that there is great interest, but are also noticeable.
The pace of digitization is another hot iron for many: 59 percent feel it too slow, while 22 percent experience it too quickly. There are certainly differences here regionally. A look at the demographic data shows that the age group of over 75-year-olds often belongs to the group of skeptical respondents, whereby 47 percent of them consider the pace to be too high.
digital split in Germany
Another central point is the perception of a digital split in Germany. 63 percent of the respondents see the country divided as digitally. This is an increase compared to previous years and represents a challenge for society. 77 percent of those surveyed agree that a lack of knowledge of dealing with digital devices and applications make everyday life difficult. If you can't do anything with the new technologies, it is increasingly difficult.
2030 The digital day will take place on June 7, 2024 with around 2,000 actions to promote digital participation and skills. The Federal Digital Minister Dr. Volker Wissing open the day. Events such as workshops, seminars and panel discussions on topics such as data use and AI should address people and inspire for the digital future.
It remains to be seen whether these initiatives can reduce the concerns of the population. It definitely seems important that more people have access to knowledge about digital technologies in order to support a positive development in society and to overcome a digital gap.
As you can see, digital participation will remain a recurring topic that affects everyone and on which we have to work together. Everyone can contribute their part to meet digital change not only with skepticism, but also with open eyes and a positive look.
