Energy efficiency in Rostock: Companies save 12 million kilowatt hours!
On October 29, 2025, the final event of the Baltic Sea Coast 3.0 energy efficiency network was celebrated in Rostock. This initiative, launched six years ago, aims to save energy and reduce emissions. Eleven regional companies took part in the network, which was launched by the Rostock municipal utilities in October 2019, and together were able to save over twelve million kilowatt hours of energy. This not only shows the commitment of the companies, but also the positive impact on environmental and climate protection.
Dr. Ute Fischer-Gäde, Rostock's senator, emphasized the importance of cooperation in the region at the event. “Every step we take in this direction contributes to our local contribution to combating global climate change,” she said. Heike Witzel, CEO of Stadtwerke Rostock AG, announced that the project will continue in spring 2026. Future topics, such as eco-mobility and innovative heating solutions, will be integrated into the network work. In the future, new partners from the region will complement the network in order to tap even more potential for savings.
Positive balance and outlook
The Energy Efficiency Network has produced numerous energy reduction initiatives. These include, for example, the use of waste heat at Viterra Rostock and the installation of a photovoltaic system at the Rostock municipal waste disposal recycling center. These measures are part of efforts to further promote energy efficiency in Rostock and minimize the environmental impact of municipal companies.
Interestingly, the city of Rostock's climate dashboard shows that energy consumption by municipal companies and the city administration has increased slightly in recent years. This is primarily due to the increased number of administrative buildings. Fortunately, a significant decrease in heat-related emissions was recorded, which is due to the high proportion of district heating in the urban area. The municipal utilities are driving forward the greening of district heating with a transformation plan in order to further develop a CO2-neutral heat supply in Rostock.
Conclusion: Community for a better climate
The final event highlights how important collaboration between companies and the city is in order to achieve the common goal of a sustainable way of life. With a strong focus on energy saving and the integration of new topics, the Rostock region has taken a decisive step in the right direction. On the occasion of this success, the anticipation of the next edition of the energy efficiency network in the region is also palpable. If people continue to work as committedly as before, Rostock can be considered a pioneer in terms of energy efficiency and climate protection. The network not only promotes the exchange of ideas, but also shows how much can be achieved together.
