Great interest in Civil Protection Day in Rostock!
Last Saturday, July 12, 2025, the third nationwide day of civil protection took place on the Haedge peninsula on Rostock's Warnow bank. Under the motto “Water – using resources, mastering risks”, interested citizens had the opportunity to find out about the diverse aspects of disaster protection. Despite the gloomy weather conditions, many visitors flocked to the event to receive advice and learn more about emergency measures.
A special highlight was the farewell of the Federal Police's operational ship "Bamberg", which was musically accompanied by the police band "Lucky Cops" at 2:30 p.m. The impressive ship is 86 meters long and has been in use since 2019. It can operate independently for up to 14 days and takes on important tasks such as sea rescue, monitoring pollution and protecting maritime infrastructure. He is also responsible for accompanying Russian tankers. It is noteworthy that the ship has flight decks for helicopters and can transport GSG 9 speedboats.
The role of civil protection
Civil protection in Germany is regulated by the Federal Civil Protection and Disaster Relief Act (ZSKG). This includes all tasks and measures of the federal government as well as the states and municipalities in disaster protection. The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), an agency of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, is responsible for implementing central aspects of civil protection. The aim is to protect the civilian population from war-related dangers and disasters. These include self-protection, warnings, protective construction and various measures to avert danger and health.
Numerous voluntary organizations such as the Technical Relief Agency, the German Red Cross, the Malteser and the Johanniter are also deployed as part of civil protection. These organizations contribute to operational implementation and are irreplaceable when it comes to providing quick and efficient assistance in the event of damage. In the event of disasters of national importance, the population is supported by the BBK, the Federal Police and the Bundeswehr, which underlines the importance of cooperation between different actors.
Challenges and future prospects
In his speech, Interior Minister Christian Pegel emphasized the challenges that climate change poses for civil protection. Extreme weather events such as storms, floods or storms require sustainable strategies and strong networking between the responsible authorities. Civil protection must face these risks and, ideally, sensitize the population to dangers in advance.
In addition, the BDBOS, responsible for digital radio for the security authorities, presented its plans. A secured and encrypted radio network should ensure high availability, regardless of the general mobile network. There are around 5,000 base stations for this network in Germany, around 100 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania alone. The plan is to set up an information network to better integrate existing networks, which represents a further step towards effective disaster protection.
The nationwide day of civil protection made it clear how important it is for the population and representatives of authorities and organizations to come together to ensure security together. It remains to be hoped that the insights gained and the solidarity experienced will continue to be fruitful in the future.
