Soundful night: Mahler 7 in Rostock's Volkstheater awakens emotions!
On August 11, 2025, the North German Philharmonic Rostock will present a very special highlight in Hall 207: the performance of Gustav Mahler's 7th Symphony. This new concert season promises an unforgettable experience in the industrial ambience of Hall 207, where classical flair is combined with modern charm.
Mahler, a master of emotional expression, composed his 7th Symphony between 1904 and 1905. Often referred to as the “Song of the Night” – a title not his own – the work comprises five movements. This symphony is considered particularly complex and is valued not only for its musical complexity but also for its artistic depth. The first movement begins in harmonic tension and transitions into a tenor horn dirge, which immediately gives the listeners a feeling for the night mood.
The program and the performance dates
A very special performance is offered under the direction of Marcus Bosch. The dates are:
- Sonntag, 14. September 2025 um 18:00 Uhr
- Montag, 15. September 2025 um 18:00 Uhr
- Dienstag, 16. September 2025 um 19:30 Uhr
The event takes place in the Volkstheater Rostock, where the impressive sound of the symphony comes into its own.
The structure of Mahler's masterpiece
The symphony is quite complex in its structure and breaks with the tradition of four movements. Memories of the inspiring nights are reflected in the two night musics: the first has a grotesque quality, while the second radiates a friendlier mood. There is also a ghostly scherzo that conveys a certain eeriness. The finale is a jubilee that delights with drums, marches and fanfare and invites the listeners to celebrate.
The special line-up, including unconventional instruments such as tenor horn, cowbells and guitar, makes this symphony unique. It demonstrates Mahler's ability to weave music with nature and the supernatural, making it one of the most challenging but also fascinating symphonic works. This symphony not only impresses with its emotional expressiveness, but also offers numerous interpretation approaches.
The premiere took place on September 19, 1908 in Prague and generated mixed reactions, but over time the reception has changed. Today, Mahler's 7th Symphony is an integral part of the repertoire of many orchestras, and it is no wonder that it is considered one of the central works of his work. Its origins and Mahler's moving living conditions during the composition make it a fascinating piece of musical history that captivates audiences again and again.
Be part of this great event and experience a piece of music history that will stay in your memory forever.
