New drinking fountain in Rostock: fresh water for everyone from July 16!
On July 16, 2025, the time has finally come: The third public drinking fountain of the Hanseatic city of Rostock will open as part of the family festival "Aktiv & Healthy in the Bürgerpark" in Toitenwinkel. This opening ceremony promises to become a great event for all families in the area, and the interest is great. The newly designed location in the northeast of the city was identified as a favorite in a feasibility study by the Office for Environmental and Climate Protection in 2023, with residents also included in the decision-making. Bianca Schuster, the department head in the said office, is enthusiastic about the initiative and sees the Bürgerpark as an important meeting point for the community.
The drinking fountain is operated by Nordwasser GmbH, which ensures that the water is regularly checked for hygiene and quality. Nordwasser GmbH plays a crucial role in the city's water supply and serves around 270,000 inhabitants as well as industry and trade. At the opening, an integrative, barrier -free play equipment is also inaugurated, which makes the family festival even more attractive. This is particularly important because access should be guaranteed for everyone.
heat provision in focus
The installation of the drinking fountain is part of a larger strategy for heat provision. Due to the climate change and the associated increase in heat days, the city planners have recognized that measures such as the creation of public drinking water positions are essential. This initiative was also made by Dr. Ute Fischer-Gäde supports the importance of pension and care tasks for the city.
In addition to the opening of the new fountain in Toitenwinkel, there are already two other fountains in the city center that have been in operation since the previous year. These wells are active from April to October and should primarily help to meet the need for refreshment and hydration during the warm months while reducing the use of disposable plastic.
climate adjustment as a joint task
climate change leads to increasingly extreme weather events, which above all strain the urban infrastructure. According to a study by the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research, it is necessary to design settlements in such a way that they are less susceptible to floods and heat periods. A well -thought -out and precautionary water management is of great importance. The city of Rostock has already committed itself to implementing these strategies and is planning further drinking fountains in additional districts such as Lütten Klein and Toitenwinkel from 2026.
The cooperation of the various urban offices as well as the Warnow water and sewage association is crucial for the successful implementation of all of these initiatives. All of these measures ensure that Rostock remains worth living not only today, but also in the future.
