Baltic Sea under pressure: Current flood alarm values in MV!

On November 3, 2025, the coastal region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will be confronted with current flood levels in the Baltic Sea. The situation is tense and the levels are being closely monitored at various measuring stations such as Wismar, Warnemünde, Althagen, Barth, Stralsund, Sassnitz and Greifswald. According to the Baltic Sea newspaper The warning of storm surges is inevitable.

What exactly does all of this mean? “Average low water” (MNW) and “average high water” (MHW) are terms that play an important role here. For Warnemünde the value of the MNW is 407 cm and that of the MHW is 617 cm. Historically, the highest recorded flood level in Warnemünde is 770 cm, recorded on November 13, 1872, while the lowest water level of 332 cm was documented on October 18, 1967.

Storm surges and their effects

The issue of storm surges remains present in the region, with recent severe storm surges in October causing serious damage of over €56 million. The city of Sassnitz in particular is struggling with a financial requirement of a whopping 42 million euros to restore its infrastructure. In addition, an amount of around 6 million euros is estimated for the loss of sand on beaches and dunes due to artificial nourishment. The Baltic Sea newspaper ended with a reference to the various warning systems that inform when flooding is imminent.

In order to warn the population in good time, the flood control centers use a variety of warning channels. These include radio, television, loudspeaker trucks, sirens, websites, warning apps and even digital billboards. Well-functioning communication is of utmost importance during such weather events.
