Rostock 1945: Memories of destruction and hope in a new beginning
In Rostock there are currently exciting opportunities to immerse yourself in the history of the city. A special highlight is the Special exhibition with the title “Rostock 1945. Twelve months between war and a new beginning”. This had its ceremonial opening on April 12th and will be on display in the Cultural History Museum until August 24th. The focus is on the last months of the Second World War and the uncertain post-war period, characterized by destruction, hope and the controversial dawn of a new era.
But the museum has even more to offer. The exhibition is dedicated to a time that was formative for many Rostock citizens. In addition to historical facts and significant events that have shaped the city, the show offers valuable insights into personal memories. Contemporary witness reports illustrate what life was like in Rostock between the war and the new beginning, and provide an emotional access to history.
Exclusive tours and events
The museum not only invites you to visit the exhibition, but also offers regular guided tours. Every Thursday at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday at 11:00 a.m., those interested can take part in guided tours to gain even deeper insights into Rostock's history. Participation in these events is also very affordable - for just three euros, anyone interested can immerse themselves in the exciting past.
Another highlight are the historical tours, which also focus on the events and upheavals of 1945. These tours shed light on the last days of the war and the new beginning that followed, incorporating personal stories from contemporary witnesses. Registration is not necessary for either tour, which makes access to history unbureaucratic and uncomplicated.
The Cultural History Museum: A place of remembrance
The Cultural History Museum is not only known for this special exhibition, but also has an extensive collection of art and cultural historical objects that document the history of Rostock from the Middle Ages to the present. It houses significant works, including paintings by Dutch masters and historical sculptures, reflecting the city's cultural heritage. The permanent collection offers a comprehensive overview of the development of urban life and economic aspects over the centuries.
An impressive part of the collection are the medieval sacred works of art, some of which come from churches that no longer exist. The presentation of handicrafts and historical toys also offers visitors an insight into the everyday life of Rostock's population from the 16th to the early 20th century.
The current exhibition and the many events are a real treasure for history buffs and invite you to take a closer look at Rostock's eventful past. The Cultural History Museum therefore remains an important place of remembrance and learning in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
