Rostock is looking for enthusiastic tour guides: apply now!
There is great anticipation in the lively city of Rostock! On November 7, 2025, the Rostock & Warnemünde Tourism Office, together with the Rostock City Guide Association, will start a new training course for prospective tour guides. This exciting initiative could perhaps be the key to bringing the city even more into the attention of tourists who come to enjoy Rostock's impressive scenery and Warnemünde Beach every year.
With around 800,000 visitors per year, Rostock not only attracts holidaymakers, but also opens up numerous opportunities for interested citizens who would like to get involved as tour guides. Tour guide Klaus Walter, active since 2023 and a former journalist, explains his enthusiasm for the city to the participants and leads them through the historic streets of the city center. “The importance of tour guides for the cityscape is enormous,” says Matthias Fromm, Rostock’s tourism director, and underlines the role that training plays in this.
A look at the training offerings
The training takes place every 14 days until April 11, 2026 and is aimed at everyone who has an affinity for the history of the city and enjoys contact with people. Participation requirements are manageable: In addition to a good knowledge of German, applicants should be sociable and reliable. It is not necessary to have any previous experience.
- Kosten: 495 Euro, inklusive Fachbuch zur Stadtgeschichte und einjährige Mitgliedschaft im Rostocker Stadtführerverein e.V.
- Abschlussprüfung: Geplant für den 24./25. April 2026.
- Bewerbungsfrist: Bis zum 30. September 2025.
The training is based on the EU standard DIN EN 15565 and the quality standards of the BVGD (Federal Association of Tour Guides in Germany), which are committed to establishing a protected professional profile. The organization attaches great importance to in-depth training, which is divided into three levels and covers topics such as art history, didactics and economics, in order to ensure the quality of the tours.
A strong network
The German Tour Guide Conference (DGFT) offers a first-class platform for exchange between tour guides in Germany. Here we discuss, train and also talk shop. In addition, members can actively build networks with decision-makers in tourism. Around 7,600 tour guides are currently organized in the BVGD and benefit from this strong community and the numerous further training offers.
Overall, the new training series promises not only well-founded basic training, but also exciting perspectives for everyone who wants to bring the stories and corners of Rostock to life. So if you have a good knack for leading groups and are interested in exciting encounters, you shouldn't miss submitting your applications by the end of September. There is definitely something there!
