Rostock's eyesore falls: demolition of the old barracks started!

Something is happening in the Kröpeliner-Tor suburb of Rostock: two empty barracks that have been unused since 2017 are facing demolition. These buildings, constructed in 1942, had previously served as workshops and warehouses. Demolition preparations will begin today, November 3, 2025, with the aim of a long-awaited transformation of the area. The area between Waldemarstrasse and the “Ulme” cafeteria is to be transformed into an inviting green area after demolition. [NDR].

The first steps of the work include clearing the barracks and cutting back the plants. These activities, which have already begun, are necessary before the big machines arrive and start the actual demolition in November. In addition, due to the construction method, some pollutant remediation is required, which could lengthen the schedule somewhat. During the construction period, the parking lot for the blood donation service on Waldemarstrasse will not be available, and the passage through the green area will be closed until the work is completed. Rostock Town Hall adds that the construction fences have already been erected and the work area is now secured.

Transformation and species protection

The entire demolition process and the subsequent renovation work are linked to a clear vision: the area should be replanted and upgraded as an open green space. The plan is for the work to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2026. Species protection measures also come into play. Bat nesting boxes will be relocated to suitable locations to support and encourage local wildlife. This is a further step towards a harmonious coexistence of nature and urban space.

The redesigned green space will not only serve as a place to relax, but will also increase the attractiveness of the district. Citizens can look forward to an even more beautiful living space that invites them to actively use and enjoy the surroundings.

In summary: The demolition work at the KTV sends a clear signal for progress and sustainability. With the aim of revitalizing this central location while respecting nature, this project could be a real asset for Rostock. Residents are invited to keep an eye on developments and enthusiastically follow the transformation of this area.
