Rostock citizens before a decision: Olympic bid in focus today!

Today in Rostock everything revolves around the question: Will the city be a candidate for the Olympic Games? The citizens decide on the possible application as an external sailing location for the Summer Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044. How NDR reported, the city administration postponed the decision on the application in June at short notice in order to set the course on Wednesday.

In the run-up to the decision, the SPD and the Greens in particular are pushing for a referendum on this important issue. You want to actively involve the Rostock population in the decision-making process. However, the city administration considers the costs of such a referendum to be too high and instead recommends that the citizens take responsibility.

Diversity of applications and concepts

The discussion about the Olympic bid has produced many motions and amendments on the topic. As in the article by Northern Courier mentioned, the administration's draft resolution has a clear commitment to the candidacy and envisages Rostock as a possible external location for the games.

The starting position is exciting, as Hamburg, Berlin, Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region are competing with each other in the German field of applicants. These cities also have their own concepts and applications in the works. The decision on the final German candidacy will be made in autumn 2026, while the concepts will be examined for their minimum requirements by the end of September 2025.

Competition for sailing competitions

Another interesting aspect in this debate is the competition between Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein for sailing competitions. The region's long-standing regatta tradition could be a decisive advantage here. But our neighbors' offshore regions are also pushing to become involved as venues.

Rostock has already gained initial experience in this direction with a feasibility study from 2012, in which Leipzig was listed as the main venue. Now it's time to take advantage of the opportunities and inspire the citizens to make a courageous decision in order to pave the way for a great event.

It remains to be seen what the citizens will decide today - the future of Rostock's Olympic bid could be at stake. The nervousness in the town hall can be felt, and the people of Rostock are excited to see what direction today's decision will take their city.
