Bad mood in MV tourism: Companies worry about the future!
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Deutschland - The mood in northern German tourism is currently anything but rosy. The current state is characterized by a noticeable consumption of consumption, as can be seen from the recent results of the tourism management survey. This was carried out by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as well as in Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Around 850 companies from the tourism and travel industry took part, with the mood in the northern German tourism industry significantly decreased compared to the good summer season. The business climate indices are noticeable: the index in the hospitality industry drops from 112 to 99 points, while the index falls from 133 to 117 points. [Nordkurier] (https://www.nordkurier.de/regional/Mecklenburg-Vorpommern/ruegen-usedom-ostsee-schlechte-im-mv-tourism- 3724372) reports of a current business climate index of 88 points in the hospitality industry.
Lars Schwarz, President of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, underlines the worrying knowledge and confirms the generally tense situation. The survey shows that the terms and conditions have deteriorated compared to the previous year. The hospitals in particular are under pressure: 70 percent rate their situation as good or satisfactory, while 30 percent negatively assess the situation. Here is the upswing of the number of overnight stays in the north, which are now moving back to pre-corona level, hardly helpful in view of the increasing costs and the lack of personnel.
biggest worries factors in view
The survey shows that 84 percent of the companies see the high labor costs as the greatest risk, followed by energy, food and raw material prices (72 percent) and the economic political framework (60 percent). In the travel industry, the situation is rated with 37 percent well and 11 percent poorly, although 24 percent expect the business situation to deteriorate. In addition, there are hardly any improvement tendencies: 16 percent of the companies surveyed expect a positive, 33 percent a negative development in the coming season. [Tourismus MV] (https://tourismus.mv/artikel/ihk-nord-veroeffent-der-der- der-BuSchUnkrege-mit-sinkendem-Schaeftsklimaindex) describes the considerable concerns of the companies about the cost increases and the ongoing lack of personnel.
The perspectives for the future have improved minimally, but the uncertainties remain. The companies are calling for flexible working time models and a reform of corporate taxation in order to be able to react better to the challenges. The geopolitical pressure, triggered by war and crises, also has a negative impact on international travel and ensures additional worry lines among those affected.
The results of the survey will throw a shadow light on the upcoming tourism conference of the IHK North, which takes place on February 22, 2024 in Papenburg. Here the challenges with which the industry is confronted are discussed and possible solutions to discuss the mood on a more positive track. It remains to be seen whether the industry can get the curve again and maybe a little light can still be seen at the end of the tunnel.
