It's blooming in Boizenburg - and not just in the gardens! The “Gießpatenschaften Boizenburg” initiative, which was launched by the Klimawerkstatt, is enjoying growing interest and has qualified for the next round of the “Gutes.Klima.Machen.” competition. qualified. It is a project that not only keeps the city trees, which are at great risk, especially in hot summers, alive, but also involves citizens in a common project. Around 50 dedicated people - including daycare centers, clubs and private individuals - take care of watering these young trees. In this way, social interaction in Boizenburg is promoted, while at the same time awareness of climate protection is growing. Deputy Mayor Franziska Matthies praises the commitment and calmness with which the people here make their contribution. Mayor Rico Reichelt himself has also taken on a casting sponsorship.
Anyone can easily get involved: anyone who sponsors a tree will receive a watering can made of recycled material and a certificate that will be attached to the tree. The city even provides an interactive interactive map on which the location data of the trees can be entered. Thanks to the support of utility companies such as Elbe GmbH, the first 50 watering cans were financed.
A green meeting place for everyone
But that's not all that Boizenburg has to offer! Aside from the sponsorships, the community garden at the Möwenhorst e.V. allotment garden association is enjoyed. V. great popularity. It was opened in 2022 and is located directly on the bike path next to Freya's orchard. The garden is a true hallmark of neighborly togetherness and not only offers nature experiences, but also a space for learning and sharing together. The idea of community gardens is not new; it has its origins in the popular community gardens in New York, which are primarily created through voluntary commitment. These green spaces not only help to increase the quality of life in the city, they also play a role in climate protection. Trees and plants provide shade, improve the urban climate and enable resource-saving practices. They also provide a buffer for rainwater during heavy rain events and thus help to mitigate flooding.

The “Gießpatenschaften Boizenburg” are an excellent example of how civic engagement not only protects nature, but also promotes social interaction. The award ceremony for the “Good.Climate.Making.” competition. takes place in October with prize money of 15,000 euros in the “well done” category. This not only honors the individual commitment of the godparents, but also increases their healthy conscience. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of each individual to protect our planet to some extent and to help ensure that future generations can also benefit from a green and livable city.
