Train commuters in MV breathe a sigh of relief: punctuality is increasing after years!
More and more people are dependent on the train connections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but everyday travel is often anything but smooth. Despite the frustrations of train cancellations and constant rail replacement services, there is light at the end of the tunnel. According to that Northern Courier The punctuality of local trains in MV has improved slightly. In 2023, almost 93% of trains reached their destination within a maximum of five minutes delay. But despite all the positive trends, punctuality remains at the second lowest level in the last ten years.
It is also pleasing that an improvement was found in four of the nine railway networks examined, which is primarily due to fewer construction sites. In the previous year, 2022, the situation was still catastrophic when the punctuality of regional trains fell to its lowest level in more than two decades. Interestingly, regional transport in MV performs better than long-distance transport in Germany, where less than 90% of trains are on time.
A look at the commuter connections
However, if you look at the commuter train from Rostock and Schwerin to Hamburg, you will notice that only 85.87% of the trains arrive on time. The situation is particularly unsatisfactory with the capital railway RE8, which runs between Wismar, Schwerin and Berlin and, with just 82.22% punctual connections, is the least punctual regional railway in MV. The constant construction work on the railway network in Berlin and diversionary traffic often lead to delays and overcrowded trains.
On the positive side, the Rasender Roland narrow-gauge railway achieves almost 100% punctuality. The RB 25 regional train on the Barth line is also impressive. The West Mecklenburg network (RE 13 and RE 14) also benefited from renovation work, while the Baltic Sea coastal network (RE 9 and RE 10) suffered a certain loss in punctuality.
Construction work and its consequences
Construction work is currently underway in the area, which began in August 2025 and could potentially have a negative impact on train punctuality. DB Regional offers comprehensive information on current construction sites and disruptions. By using the DB Navigator app, users can find out the best connections, access information on ticket prices and journey history and be informed about timetable deviations via push notification.
If you want to get an overview of rail traffic in Germany, this is the site bahn.de placed close to heart. Here you can find all the necessary information, such as current disruptions, train radars or departure boards, to keep local travelers well informed.
VMV boss Carsten Werfel also commented on the situation and emphasized that he believes the rail system nationwide has reached its limits. Despite all the challenges, the Pro Bahn passenger association remains optimistic that the comprehensive construction program could ultimately lead to a lasting improvement in punctuality.
