Brutal attack on the police in Schwerin: Minister are calling for consequences!

In the night of June 14, 2025, four police officers in Schwerin became the victim of a brutal attack while trying to settle a dispute. There was a tangible incident in Münzstrasse when the emergency services were confronted with a group of 15 to 20 people. The situation escalated very quickly and ended that a 28-year-old police officer attended the head when trying to fix one of the rioters and lost consciousness for a short time. His 27-year-old colleague, who hurried to help him, was able to ward off further attacks, but two other police officers were also injured.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Interior Minister Christian Pegel sentenced the attack as unacceptable and emphasizes that such an assault on emergency services is also an attack on the rule of law itself. "The security of our police officers must be guaranteed," said Pegel, who also announced a consistent criminal prosecution of the perpetrators. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig said shocked about this incident and thanked the police for their brave commitment.

increasing violence against police officers

The numbers speak a clear language: In 2024, the police registered 151 cases of violence against civil servants, a significant increase compared to the 111 cases in 2023. Over 1100 attacks were documented nationwide, which corresponds to a full increase of almost nine percent. These worrying developments are a sign of a changed social climate that is characterized by a lack of appreciation for the police and frequent alcohol abuse. This increasing violence against emergency services also causes political reactions: politicians and trade unionists are calling for a rapid education and clearer consequences for the perpetrators.

The demands are also found to expand the video surveillance by the CDU member of the state parliament Ann Christin von Allwörden, who sees this step as an alarm signal. The AfD parliamentary group leader Nikolaus Kramer also advocates a zero tolerance strategy towards violent groups and suggests that the police be equipped with Tasern.

support for the police

The police union (GdP) once again pointed out the need to better secure the emergency services. GDP state chief Christian Schumacher made it clear that more support for the police was necessary to better protect the general public. A lack of consequences after acts of violence against police officers are worrying and would urgently be addressed.

Finally, it is important to point out the study results of the Goethe University in Frankfurt in the context of police violence. Under the title "Violence in Office", these examine the causes of excessive use of violence by civil servants and emphasize that in many cases a poorly sophisticated communication, stress and excessive demands lead to exaggerated reactions. Especially in conflict situations, the use of interpreters could contribute to de -escalation and thus possibly prevent bad incidents as in Schwerin.

The police in Schwerin have set up a point of view and calls on the population to actively help with the investigation of the incident. In this sense, the responsibility also lies with each individual of us that such attacks on emergency services do not become normal.
