Young talents in Leezen: Glider pilots dream of an Airbus career!

On August 17, 2025, the sky over Leezen is unusually clear, and that means that the glider pilots at the airfield in Pinnow are particularly active today. Finlay Scheimann, a 15-year-old flying enthusiast, has dedicated himself intensively to gliding for the last two years. Together with his flight instructor, Gerald Pfeiffer, he starts his adventure with a glider from the local flying club. The take-off is not done with a motorized aircraft, but with a tow rope and a winch, a technology that further enhances the feeling of freedom.

However, it is also important to face the challenges of aviation. Today the flights are quite short due to the lack of thermals; the aim is to last four to five minutes. For Finlay, this is no reason to be discouraged. He has big dreams and plans to become a pilot for Lufthansa in the future, ideally on an Airbus A350-1000. His passion for flying drives him.

Competition as an opportunity

On September 6th, Finlay and other young people from all over Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will take part in the state youth comparison flying, which starts at 9:30 a.m. With a total of 20 registered participants, the competition promises exciting flight maneuvers and ends with a precision landing that demands everything. Erik Heinze, an 18-year-old and former student from Leezen, is also active in the club and uses the flying lessons in August to prepare for the event.

The Schwerin/Pinnow Flying Club e. V. not only has big plans for the training of young pilots, but also administrative ones. The lease agreement for the airfield in Pinnow, an area of 56 hectares, is to be extended until the end of 2029. The site is managed through membership fees, with the focus in the next few weeks being on youth work. The club currently has 12 student pilots aged 14 to 16, which underlines the positive development in gliding.

The flying club and its vision

The good cooperation with glider pilots from Neustadt-Glewe shows how events can be better organized together. The vision of the flying club is not just the training of pilots. The aim is also to create a space where aviation enthusiasts can live out their passion. The efforts that the members put into promoting youth are forward-looking - after all, they are the backbone of the club.

As recent developments show, interest in gliding remains unbroken. Whether it's learning to fly or competing, the next generation has big ambitions. And perhaps we will soon see Finlay and his colleagues in the skies of the world as professional pilots - right up there in the cockpits of Airbus aircraft.
