Schwerin: TV tower loses height – helicopter dismantling started!

Things will be going high in Schwerin this week, because the city's landmark, the television tower, will lose part of its striking silhouette when its top is dismantled. On Thursday, August 14, 2025, the GRP cylinder, which previously formed the top of the tower, will be dismantled by helicopter. The area around the tower is already cordoned off to ensure safety during the work. This measure is necessary because the GRP cylinder is no longer technically needed and radio services for television and radio are now taken over by a neighboring transmission mast, as [NDR](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/westmecklenburg/Schwerin-helikopter-demontiert-spitze-des- Fernsehenturms,mvregioSchwerin-890.html) reports.

The dismantling is planned to reduce the tower height by 9.68 meters, and upon completion of this work, the television tower will reach a height of 116 meters. This means that it loses the title of the tallest building in Schwerin - in the future the cathedral with its 117.5 meters will wear this crown. DFMG Deutsche Funkturm GmbH, owner of the tower, approved the dismantling in coordination with the State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation to ensure that everything is done correctly.

Technical backgrounds

The dismantling will be carried out in four parts, with a helicopter landing on the site on Wednesday to prepare for the work. The DFMG has planned this for mid-August, depending on the weather. This operational decision shows that the company has a good hand in its planning to effectively manage such large-scale interventions, as the DFMG website confirms: DFMG.

Although the TV tower is undergoing significant change, it remains a central point for directional and cellular services in the region. The DFMG emphasizes that the communication supply is not at risk as a result of the dismantling work, as the technological transmission to the neighboring transmission mast has already been converted.

A piece of Schwerin history

The television tower in Schwerin is not only a functional radio location, but also a well-known landmark of the city. With its previous height of 125.68 meters, it was for a long time the most striking building in the area. After the dismantling, however, it will no longer be included in the ranking of the tallest buildings in the city, as an overview of the television towers and broadcasting systems in Germany shows: [Wikimedia](https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_ Fernsehent%C3%BCrme_und_Sendeanlagen_der_Deutschen_Funkturm_GmbH).

The city is facing an exciting change, and the dismantling of the television tower will certainly raise questions. But as the past has shown, change often creates new opportunities - both for the city and its residents.
