Schwerin: Police officer kicked unconscious while fighting – two arrests!

On Saturday, June 16, 2025, a worrying incident occurred in Schwerin, more precisely on Münzstrasse, that brings public safety into focus. At around 2 a.m., police encountered a group of 15 to 20 people who were involved in an argument. During the intervention, a 28-year-old police officer was brutally attacked and briefly lost consciousness. This is reported by [NDR](https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/westmecklenburg/Schwerin-28-Jaehriger-Polizist-bei-Attack-wachtlos-tritt,mvregio Schwerin4394.html).

While arresting a suspect, the young officer was hit in the head by another attacker. He received help from his colleague, a 27-year-old police officer who did her best to support her partner despite being attacked. A similar fate happened to two other police officers who also suffered injuries during the operation. The group quickly dispersed after the incident, but the police were able to identify and temporarily arrest two 22-year-old suspects nearby, who, however, attacked the officers again during the arrest. The police have initiated investigations into grievous bodily harm, resistance to law enforcement officers and physical attacks.

Violence against police officers

This incident is not isolated and is part of a worrying development in Germany. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, statistics show an increase in violent attacks against police officers. Between 2014 and 2023, numerous cases were recorded by the police that are becoming increasingly dangerous for officers. The comprehensive survey highlights the growing willingness to use violence against security forces and the urgent need for protective measures. The data is available on Statista and documents the developments in violent crime in Germany.

The last few years in particular have shown a worrying trend. The incident in Schwerin is just another example of the challenges police officers face every day. The legal consequences of such attacks on law enforcement officers are also draconian. A recent BGH decision confirmed the seriousness of such attacks and made it clear that resistance and physical attacks against officials cannot be tolerated. In one such case, a defendant was sentenced to three years in prison for grievous bodily harm and admitted to a psychiatric hospital. This was documented by NWB, which also points out the minor consequences that these attacks can have for the officers themselves.

Given these worrying statistics and incidents, it is clear that society must be vigilant to ensure the safety of its law enforcement officers. Each of these incidents is a sign that it is time to think not only about punishments for perpetrators, but also about how to make policing safer.
