Schwerin's cult disco Octagon becomes a rental property: What's next?
An era is currently coming to an end in the Schwerin “octagon”. After 25 years of catering, owner Frank Porsch has decided to close the popular discotheque and offer the space - either for rent or for sale. The last over-30 party took place almost a year ago, and the event location, which covers over 820 square meters, has remained unused since then. Porsch emphasizes that the building structure is in perfect condition and the future use of the property can be designed absolutely flexibly. Whether catering, retail or sporting facilities – the options are diverse. [ostsee-zeitung.de]
Porsch is already in discussions with potential tenants and buyers, but is keeping quiet about specific figures and price information. Tenants in the lower part of the building, such as an arcade and an internal medicine practice, are not affected by the decision. They have their rental agreements and can continue to conduct their business.
Back to the past?
The “octagon” has a long history that dates back to 1969. As a former hotspot for the party scene in Schwerin, the establishment has experienced many highlights. After closing due to the corona pandemic, the discotheque reopened around four years ago and was a popular meeting place until recent developments. Owner Frank Porsch is now planning a return to the party scene and has announced an over-30s party for the night of October 2nd to 3rd. This party will also be open to students under 30, with DJ Sven Burmeister playing music from the 80s and 90s. For Porsch it is important to ensure a nostalgic evening away from electro dance music (EDM). [nordkurier.de]
Tickets for the event are only available at the box office for 10 euros, although Porsch is already warning guests that things could get tight around 10.30 p.m. “We want to bring back the atmosphere of the previous parties,” says Porsch. He also plans to offer regular over-30 parties, with special events such as a Women's Day celebration on March 8, 2024.
Gastronomy is changing
Gastronomy as a significant economic factor plays an important role not only in Schwerin, but throughout Germany. According to reports, the industry generated a record turnover of 115.2 billion euros in 2023. There are a variety of dining establishments in Germany, ranging from restaurants and discos to bars and cafés. The corona pandemic clearly left its mark, and sales only slowly recovered. The developments in the octagon are exemplary of the challenges that the catering industry faces. Digitalization and a growing trend towards vegan gastronomy make the industry not only diverse but also demanding. Despite the challenges, catering establishments rely on responding flexibly and innovatively to the changing needs of guests.
