Two drug runners convicted in Schwerin: suspended sentences for the gang!

On October 13, 2025, the Schwerin regional court once again set an example in the fight against drug crime. Two men, aged 33 and 30, were convicted and given suspended sentences of 12 and 18 months. Both had acted as so-called “runners” in a drug gang that was active from summer 2020 to fall 2021 and sold significant amounts of drugs, including marijuana, amphetamine, cocaine and ecstasy tablets. The head of this gang was already sentenced to a long prison sentence in 2023, as ndr.de reports.

The current verdict is final because the men accepted the verdicts and no appeal was filed. Such judicial decisions come at a time when drug-related crime is a burning issue in Germany. After all, around 347,000 drug crime cases were recorded by the police in 2023, which corresponds to an increase of 2 percent compared to the previous year. Mainly it all revolves around cannabis, which already accounts for a significant proportion of registered crimes. Statista highlights that around 208,000 cases were related to this substance in the same year.

New procedures are on the way

But this is not the only procedure that is currently making headlines in Schwerin. Six months after the arrest of drug lords who were responsible for a large cannabis plantation in Demmin, four suspected operators and drug traffickers will be in court from January 18, 2024. The men, whose ages range from 33 to 74, face allegations of large-scale drug trafficking. They are accused of having distributed cannabis, amphetamines and cocaine in the Wismar area between May and July 2023. According to the prosecution, the head of the gang, a 49-year-old German, is said to have made a decisive contribution to the trade. Nordkurier reports that special forces were deployed during the arrest.

In Wismar, drug trafficking is still a serious problem that not only concerns the police. The confiscated 40,000 euros in cash and 16 kilograms of marijuana are evidence of the extent of what happened. At a time when the use of illegal drugs is increasingly coming into focus due to health and social challenges, it remains to be seen how the judiciary will deal with such cases.

Catching up against drug crime

The numbers are alarming: drug-related deaths in Germany have increased in recent years. In 2023, around 2,230 drug-related deaths were counted, many of whom died from long-term health problems caused by excessive drug use. Cities like Bremen in particular are known as strongholds, which, according to Statista, have the highest death rate due to drug use with almost 5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Drug crime remains a central issue in German society. The current court cases could show how seriously the judiciary is taking this problem and whether the measures are effective in the long term. It remains exciting to see what the coming weeks have in store for the accused drug traffickers and the cities affected.
