Summer beaches in northern Germany: sun, fun and safety!

The temperatures are rising, and with them the desire for a day on the beach is growing. On June 21, 2025, northern Germany will experience summer temperatures that reach up to 30 degrees in Hamburg. Direct neighboring countries such as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can also look forward to summery weather, with temperatures hovering around 29 degrees. These weather conditions attract numerous visitors to the beaches of the North and Baltic Seas, and there are even occasional day visitors from North Rhine-Westphalia.

The beaches in Scharbeutz, Travemünde and Büsum are particularly popular, all of which have a high number of visitors. Bettina Schäfer, the mayor of Scharbeutz, is pleased with the good preparation and commitment of the DLRG (German Life Saving Society), which ensures safety on the beaches. Uwe Kirchhoff, spa director in Travemünde, also sees a positive development and expects visitor numbers to continue to rise. Another highlight is the beach in Markgrafenheide, which is also well attended, while some campsites are already fully booked.

Safety on the water

The DLRG, the largest voluntary water rescue organization in the world, has a large area of responsibility on the beaches of the Bay of Lübeck. Here, lifeguards from all over Germany fight for safety in, around and on the water during the bathing season. But safety should also be in the hands of the bathers. It is important to observe the flags on the DLRG watchtowers and follow the instructions of the lifeguards.

The largest DLRG guard station in the Bay of Lübeck will also be built on the border between Scharbeutz and Timmendorfer Strand, which is scheduled to open in 2025. This measure shows how serious those responsible are about ensuring safety in the popular holiday region. In unfavorable weather conditions, bathing operations can be restricted, which is why the DLRG stations provide information about the current situation on site.

Cooperation for security

The responsibility for averting dangers in water lies with the municipalities, which rely on the integration of their resources in the event of emergencies on the water. The state of Schleswig-Holstein does not have its own water rescue resources for non-municipal coastal waters, so the authorities work closely with private institutions and volunteer fire departments. An agreement with the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) ensures that water rescue in coastal waters is coordinated.

The need to analyze and improve the alerting processes between the integrated control centers and the DGzRS has been a major topic in the past and has led to a working group that has developed proposals for standardized processes. This ensures that action can be taken quickly and efficiently in the event of an emergency.

These efforts, coupled with the sunny weather and the hot days ahead, are increasing the anticipation of unforgettable beach visits in the Bay of Lübeck. Nevertheless, your own safety should always be the priority so that your stay by the water remains a carefree experience. Sunday promises high temperatures again with up to 34 degrees in Hamburg and 33 degrees in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, followed by changeable weather next week with possible thunderstorms.
