Stettin: On the way to a sustainable metropolitan region – opportunities for MV!
The Szczecin metropolitan region is currently undergoing an exciting change. It is becoming increasingly clear that the region is on the way to becoming a sustainable metropolitan region. The aim of this development is to actively promote tourism, economy, culture and urban development in the Pomerania region. The positive effects are already clearly noticeable in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. NDR reported on the current discussions that not only affect coastal residents, but also cities such as Rostock, Greifswald, Schwerin and Neubrandenburg.
A central element in this process is the office for the Stettin metropolitan region, which was founded in Anklam in July 2019. This initiative is supported by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg and aims to improve networking in the areas of politics, science, business, education, culture and society. The Advisory Board, consisting of 26 members under the leadership of Olgierd Geblewicz, Marshal of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, and Daniel Wacinkiewicz, Deputy Mayor of Szczecin, plays an important role in this. The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania emphasizes that cooperation with Poland is anchored in the Brandenburg state constitution and is viewed as a strategic goal of the state government.
Tourism and economy in focus
The development of Szczecin as a dynamically growing regional center is seen by many as an opportunity. The region is increasingly focusing on exchanges in the area of German foreign trade, which amounted to over 162 billion euros with Poland in 2022. This economic weight underlines the importance of the metropolitan region and opens new doors for cooperation.
The city is currently also driving cultural development. Particular attention is paid to projects and initiatives that aim to both promote local talent and attract tourists. The program “MV in Focus”, moderated by Annette Ewen and Mirja Freye, offers weekly insights into these developments and talks about what moves people in the region. [NDR].
Cooperation with Poland
The positive development of the metropolitan region is of great importance for neighboring countries. The West Pomeranian Voivodship has been a reliable partner for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for many years. We are working together to further deepen cultural and economic relations.
Szczecin is well on the way to establishing itself as a future-oriented location that could also be very popular internationally in the coming years. The relevance of this development goes beyond regional borders and could also attract nationwide attention. It remains to be seen how the metropolitan region will develop in the near future.
